First year students are required to complete all developmental writing and mathematics within the first year of enrollment. If the developmental courses (math/writing) are not completed within the first year of enrollment the student will be "stopped-out." Being "stopped-out" means that the student must complete these requirements at a community college before they can return to the University. The University’s “Basic Subjects” policy further requires that as soon as any needed developmental courses are completed, students must enroll in the General Education Basic Subjects (Section A) classes in writing, critical reasoning, oral communication and math. Enrollment must be continuous until Section A is completed. Executive Order No. 665was issued by the California State University System to establish system-wide requirements to bring students who need preparatory work up to competency levels in English and Mathematics. Minimum standards have been established for campus compliance. Students must be placed in the appropriate preparatory courses in the first quarter of attendance and each subsequent quarter. All required preparatory work must be completed within one year from the date of enrollment. The following reflects the policies established for compliance with Executive Order No. 665 at CSUN beginning with the fall 1998 quarter: All undergraduate students admitted to CSUN must have proof of exemption or take the: Early Assessment Program (EAP) and/or at the earliest possible date after admission. Test scores must be on file at CSUN prior to registering for classes. If test results from the EPT/ELM indicate that preparatory course work in English and/or Math is required, students must be enrolled at CSUN in the appropriate course work their first quarter of attendance and are expected to enroll each subsequent quarter until all preparatory work is completed. The mandatory course placements by test score are listed in the current Schedule of Classes. First-term enrollment in preparatory coursework is mandatory exceptions are not permitted. Students must complete with a "CR" all developmental course requirements within one year (two consecutive semesters) from the term of enrollment. Failure to meet these requirements will result in being "stopped out" of the university based on lack of satisfactory progress toward the degree. Registration will be cancelled for students who do not enroll in required preparatory courses in their first semester of enrollment. Students will be informed of the cancellation and provided an opportunity to move their application forward to the next semester. Students required enrolling in English and/or Math preparatory course will not be allowed to drop the preparatory course. Students may complete section changes (i.e., add and drop same course). Non-enrollment in or withdrawal from a semester or more for a documented compelling reason, such as death in the family, serious illness, disability, or an accident, may result in commensurate time extension. Policies and procedures relating to Executive Order No. 665 are handled through the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Students should consult with an academic advisor for options. Some of these options include completing certain math and/or english courses at a community college or through extended learning. Executive Order 665– Enrollment Requirements in Math and English The California State University Chancellor’s Office has issued Executive Order 665 requiring that all first-time freshmen in the 23 campus system complete all remedial courses within their first year of enrollment. All first time freshmen admitted in Fall 1998 or later must comply with these requirements. Failure to comply with these requirements will jeopardize your ability to enroll after your first year. All incoming freshmen are required to maintain enrollment in the appropriate math and composition courses beginning with their first semester and continuing without break until they have completed the GE Math and GE Written Composition requirements . Placement in remedial (developmental) coursework is determined by the scores received on the ELM and EPT tests. Students must receive a grade of “CR” in order to move into the next course in the sequence, otherwise they must repeat the course they received “NC” in.
* Students who receive a grade of “NC” in their 1 st semester in either 097 or 093 must seek important information in the Advising Resource Center/EOP before registration in their 2 nd semester.
