Scheduling Appointments

Advisors in the ARC/EOP are available to all EOP and undecided/undeclared students to help in many ways, including course registration, deciding on majors, and reviewing academic progress. Special academic and career counseling is provided to help students realize their personal aspirations for professional schools or international fellowships.

When and how should I make an appointment to see my advisor?

You should make an appointment to see your academic advisor when you want to plan for your next semester, when you have questions about academic policies and procedures, or when you need help locating other helpful resources on campus. And a few words of advice: Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule an appointment. If you plan ahead, you will have more choices of courses available to you, and you will be far less stressed out! Also, you can be sure that your advisor will have time to devote to you and your concerns.

Will I Be Assigned A Specific Advisor?

No. Generally you will see the first available advisor when you walk into the office. You are not assigned a specific advisor but if you want to work with a certain advisor, you may check the schedule and go to see her or him. If you need/want to drop by and ask a question, you will find that any advisor will be able to answer your questions and/or provide you with an appropriate referral.

What If My Questions Are Not Related To Academic Advising

Not a problem. Regardless of the content, our advisors will attempt to answer your questions. When appropriate we will assist you in finding the office or service on campus to meet your needs.

Must I Make An Appointment?

No. You are welcome to walk in during our regular office hours- you will been seen depending on availability on a first come first serve basis. However, you may make an appointment if you would like to block an extended period of time for goal-setting and discussion of your academic future.

Who Does ARC/EOP Advise?

ARC/EOP is a centralized advising office that serves prospective and currently enrolled undecided/undeclared students.

Why should I go to the Advising Resource Center/EOP…and what can the advisors in the ARC/EOP do for me?

Often, students come to CSUN uncertain about what major they want to explore, so they are matriculated as “Undeclared Students.” If you have not yet declared a major area of study, you are considered an “Undeclared Student,” and you can drop by the ARC/EOP in the Student Services Building 210 or call 818.677.2108 to make an appointment to meet with one of the professional staff advisors, peer advisor mentors, career counselor or career interns .

The advisors in the Advising Resource Center/EOP are available to:

    • Assist you in selecting and registering for courses that meet both general education requirements and allow you to explore various fields of study (majors) that may help you decide upon a major area of study
    • Provide accurate and up-to-date information about programs and services as well as policies and procedures at the University
    • Assist students in assessing academic strengths and interests that will lead to the declaration of a major
    • Refer you to academic departments and other university services

Do I have to do anything before I see my advisor? Is there anything I should bring with me?

Because successful advisement depends upon the relationship between you and your advisor, you should:

  • Make an appointment to see your advisor when you have questions or need assistance. Appointments ensure that the advisor is available and that s/he can devote a block of time entirely to you
  • Arrive on time to your appointments with your advisor. If you are more than 15 minutes late you may need to reschedule. If you cannot keep your appointment, call to reschedule.
  • Bring a list of preferred courses and a list of any questions you may have. Being prepared will save time for both you and your advisor.

What is a “GE Planner”? How do I get one?

All matriculated students should have a General Education Planner, which outlines courses you need to take to fulfill your General Education requirements. As you take courses at the University, you and your advisor will work with the GE Planner to indicate your progress and determine which requirements you still need to fulfill. Think of your GE Planner as a “roadmap” towards your academic goals.
