REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION
Applicants must meet the university requirements for post-baccalaureate admission.
1. Have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university.
2. Have been in good standing at the last institute attended.
3. Have at least a 2.5 grade point average in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units attempted, independent of when the
baccalaureate was granted. The entire semester or quarter in which the 60-90 units began will be used in this
calculation. Lower division courses or courses taken in extension (except in concurrent enrollment at CSUN in the
upper division), after obtaining the bachelor’s degree will be excluded from the calculation
In addition to the university requirements, the English department has three admission status categories:
Classified, Conditionally Classified and Denied Entrance
A Classified student has fulfilled the following three criteria:
1) A BA in English or have already completed 24 upper-division approved English semester units with 3.0 GPA (If you do not have a BA in English you must take 8 courses from this list of Qualifying Course before applying to the program)
A Conditionally Classified student has a BA in English or has already completed 24 upper-division approved English semester units with a minimum 3.0 GPA, and needs to fulfill one or more of the following criteria:
Denied students fall into one or more of these categories:
1) Do not have a BA in English
2) Do not have 24 upper-division approved English semester units (If you do not have a BA in English you must take 8- semester unit courses from this list of Qualifying Course before applying to the program)
3) Do not have the required minimum GPA of 3.0 in UD English units
*Denied students may not take any graduate level courses (500-600).
*Denied students may take qualifying courses (300-400 level) through the Tseng College of Extended Learning to improve GPA or lack of units.
Conditionally classified students may take graduate classes as they work on fulfilling the GRE and UDWPE conditions required for classified status. However, students cannot go beyond 12 units of coursework until classified status is achieved. Note that the English Department's requirements for classification are more stringent than the university's requirements.
PLEASE NOTE: All students with a GPA of 3.59 or less in their upper-division English units must take the GRE at least once.
For students who have taken the GRE once and who do not score in the 80th percentile, we have to wait for the GPA of the first 12 graduate units. If a student’s GPA in the first 12 graduate units is 3.5 or higher, the original GRE score will stand and the student does not have to retake the GRE. If a student‘s GPA in the first 12 graduate units is between 3.00 and 3.49, he or she will have to achieve the designated GRE score that matches the GPA in the table below. Students not classified at 12 units must get approval from Dr. Chatterjee to take classes.
