1. Announcements:
- Ian Barnard, Petra Dierkes-Thrun, and Leilani Hall will speak at Sigma Tau Delta's English Grad School Workshop from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 in 310 Sierra Hall. The event will help answer questions students have about the process of applying to and attending graduate school. Refreshments will be served.
- Members of the English Department Personnel
Committee will be available 1:30-3 p.m.
Oct. 24 and 3:30-5 p.m. Oct. 25 in Sierra
Tower 703 to hear from students who wish
to comment on the teaching effectiveness
of any of the faculty members being considered
for Retention, Tenure, or Promotion.
If unable to attend, students may submit
written comments to the Personnel Committee
at Sierra Tower 704. All comments will
be held in confidence by the committee.
2. Reminders:
- Provost Harry Hellenbrand will host
question-and-answer sessions concerning
the Retention, Tenure, and Promotion
process: 12:30-2 p.m. Oct. 25 and 10-11:30
a.m. Nov. 17. Both sessions will be held
in Sierra Hall 451. Reservations can
be made at extension 6536 or kelly.kroeker@csun.edu.
- Each semester the English Department
recognizes outstanding work by its students
with a variety of awards. The Oliver
W. Evans Writing Prize ($100) is awarded
for the best piece of prose (critical
or creative) submitted in an upper-division
English course. The Eva Latif Writing
Prize in Children’s Literature
($100) is awarded for the best piece
of writing (critical or creative) by
a student on the subject of children’s
literature. The Henry Van Slooten Award
($500) is a new prize to be awarded to
a lower-division student who has written
an essay on any topic that best demonstrates “a
passion for the English language.” Contact
Evelyn McClave for submission requirements.
The deadline for submissions for student
awards is Nov. 13.
- The Harry Finestone Award of $750 will
be given to the graduate student whose
thesis in literary studies is considered
by a panel to be the most distinguished.
The thesis must be nominated by the faculty
director, and the panel will evaluate
the nominees on the following criteria:
potential scholarly impact; logical and
effective organization; and clarity,
coherence, and elegance of prose style.
The thesis must have been filed in 2005-2006
and the student must have a GPA of 3.5.
Nomination forms are available in the
English Department Office (706 Sierra
Tower). The application deadline is Nov.3.The Northridge Review staff invites
you to join in on the celebration of
the Fall 2006 issue of CSUN's award-winning
literary magazine. The celebration starts
at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13 in Jerome
Richfield 319. Refreshments will be served.
Friends and family are welcome to join
in on the fun.
- The Richard Lid and Helen Lodge Scholarship
is an annual award of $500 given to a
graduate student enrolled in English
and/or Secondary Education to help pay
for fees for graduate work. The applicant
must be teaching in middle school or
secondary school or be on sabbatical.
Applications are available in the English
Department Office and are due Nov. 13.
- The Huntington Library has a variety of short- and long-term fellowships available for faculty members and graduate students. The fellowships allow scholars to use the extensive library collection for their projects and provide some monetary compensation. The application deadline is Dec. 15. - The Northridge Review is accepting
submissions from students for the Spring
2007 issue of CSUN's award-winning literary
magazine. For guidelines and cover sheets

- Thursday’s Notes is
also published weekly on our department
webpage. Please submit items for upcoming Thursday’s
Notes to Scott Andrews, the Associate
Chair, or to the Thursday’s

3. Faculty/Student/Staff Achievements:
- Leilani Hall presented her paper "Creative Writing as the Paitent Body" at the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association conference in Tucson. She is currently one of two advisors to the Associated Writing Programs Pedagogy Steering Committee.
- Evelyn McClave has been asked to serve on the Scientific Committee for the International Society of Gesture Studies conference in June at Northwestern University.

Competitions and Fellowships
- Research opportunities are available in connection with the Tseng Family Collection of Chinese antiquities, which were donated to CSUN by Roland Tseng. The research may be focused on artistry, history, language and culture of China, or on the origin, nature, and artistry of the donated antiquities. A total pool of $50,000 will be available to award in 2006-2007. The proposal deadline is Nov. 29. Guidelines are available at http://www.csun.edu/research/03_Research/09_on-campuscompetion.html.
Lectures and Other Events
- James Ballard, associate professor of Sociology at CSUN, will present "Publishing Successfully: Strategies for Success" 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 in 451 Sierra Hall (Whitsett Room). Reseervations can be made by contacting kelly.kroeker@csun.edu.
- Online Instruction and Smart Technologies will present "SmartBoards in Essence and Manifestation," a demonstration and workshop on SmartBoard technology in some CSUN classrooms, 3-4:30 Oct. 31 in 451 Sierra Hall (Whitsett Room).
