1. Announcements:
- Don Bogen, Professor of English at the University of Cincinnati, is the Department’s Distinguished Visiting Speaker and will read from his work at 7 p.m. April 18 in the Whitsett Room (SH 451). He is the author of four books, Luster (2003), The Known World (1997), After the Splendid Display (1986), and A Necessary Order: Theodore Roethke and the Writing Process (1991). He is the editor of The Cincinnati Review and is a book reviewer for The Nation. The reading, book-signing, and reception are open to the public.
- The Department extends its condolences to Sharon Smartt, whose mother, Eva Smartt, passed away on April 1.
- Please announce to your classes the various departmental awards for undergraduate and graduate students. You can get information on the awards in the English Department office.
2. Reminders:
- The Associated Graduate Students in English (AGSE) at CSUN will hold its annual graduate student conference on April 28, 2007. This year's conference title is "Red Light Literature: Confronting Taboos.” Students are invited to submit paper proposals that explore the theme of taboos and their incarnations and transformations including, but not limited to: dissections, deconstructions, blurrings, violations, regulations, disruptions, and/or transgressions. - The English Intern Program will be hosting an English major career workshop 3-5 p.m. April 23 in the Whitsett Room (SH 451). Information will be provided for students interested in careers other than teaching. Featured speakers will include Jan Potzmann from the Career Center and English Department graduates who will share their experiences in making the transition into the workplace. 3. Faculty/Student/Staff Achievements:
- Mary Angelino, a creative
writing (poetry) student, has accepted
a four-year fellowship at the MFA program
at University of Arkansas, where she
was also awarded a TA position.
- Joseph Thomas presented
his paper “Curious Boys, or How
William S. Burroughs Murdered Children’s
Literature” and chaired and co-organized
the panel "The End of Children's Literature" at
the Seventh Biennial Conference on Modern
Critical Approaches to Children's Literature
in Nashville, Tenn.
- Beth Wightman's essay "Geopolitics
and the Sight of the Nation: Elizabeth
Bowen's The Last September" has
appeared in LIT: Literature Interpretation
Theory 18. She has also been selected
to participate in the NEH Summer Seminar
on "Joyce's Ulysses: Texts and Contexts," directed
by Kevin Dettmar at Trinity College Dublin.

Competitions and Fellowships
- Rattle, a journal that offers
$5,000 for first place in its poetry
contest, is accepting submissions with
a deadline of Aug. 1. For more information,

Lectures and Other Events
- Gloria DeLaTorre-Wycoff, author of Scarred
by Scandal, Redeemed by Love: The Triumph
of an Unmarried Mother, will appear
as part of the CSUN Distinguished Speaker
Program at 11 a.m. April 17 in the
Whitsett Room (SH 451).
- Novelist and poet Sesshu Foster will
present a discussion and slide show titled “Atomik
Aztex: Identity, Border Crossings, and
Rage” at 4:20-7 p.m. April 26 in
the Flintridge Room of the University
Student Union. His appearance is part
of the CSUN Distinguished Visiting Speaker
Program.
Jobs and Oportunities
- The English Department at UC Riverside
is seeking applicants for full- and part-time
lecturer positions for its composition
classes. The application deadline is
April 23. For more information, contact

- The CSU Summer Arts Program will offer
a course this year titled “How
to Create Comic Books and Graphic Novels.” The
guest faculty will include Sabrina Jones,
Trina Robbins, Paul Buhle, and Spain
Rodriguez. Also, Terry Zwigoff, director
of the films Crumb, Art
School Confidential, and Ghost
World, will be a guest speaker. Students
interested in the class, which will run
