1. Announcements:

  • Nominations for the 2007 Faculty Awards are being accepted until Feb. 26.  The Awards are: Outstanding Faculty (up to 2 awards, $1,500 each); Distinguished Teaching, Counseling, or Librarianship (up to 3 awards, $1,000 each); Preeminent Scholarly Publication(s) ($1,000); Exceptional Creative Accomplishment(s) ($1,000); Extraordinary Service ($1,000); and Visionary Community Service-Learning ($1,000).   • The Spring 2007 Faculty Development Book Group will be discussing Martin Bickman’s Minding American Education.  The group will meet 1-2 p.m. on Feb. 28, March 28, and April 11 in 439 Sierra Hall, the CIELO Sky Conference Room. The group is limited to 10 participants, each of whom will receive a complimentary copy of the book. For more information, contact Kelly Kroeker at extension 6536 or kelly.kroeker@csun.edu.
  • Applications for the Faculty Early Retirement Program should be submitted six months prior to the beginning of the academic year in which the faculty member plans to begin participating in the program. The deadline for applications for this year is Feb. 20. If you have questions, contact Penelope Jennings, Associate Vice President of Faculty Affairs, at extension 2962.

2. Reminders:

  • The annual Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Awards provide faculty the opportunity to receive up to $5,000 to pursue their scholarly and creative interests.  Faculty may apply for three units of released time and/or funds for project expenses. The deadline for submission of applications is 5 p.m. Feb. 26. Applications should be submitted to the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects in University Hall 265. Faculty may also obtain application materials from our web page at: http://www.csun.edu/research
  • The English Department has a set of instructions for using the AIS Toolbar to check the accessibility of web pages. The instructions can be found at http://www.csun.edu/english/AISToolbar.html .
  • Thursday’s Notes is also published weekly on our department webpage. Please submit items for upcoming Thursday’s Notes to Scott Andrews, the Associate Chair, or to the Thursday’s Notes folder in Martha Alzamora’s office.

3. Faculty/Student/Staff Achievements:

  • Irene Clark’s book titled Writing the Successful Thesis and Dissertation: Entering the Conversation has been published by Prentice Hall. A copy has been placed in the English Department Conference Room for student use.
  • Fred Field was the coordinator for a special session, “Education Issues in Creole Contexts,” at the annual joint meeting of the Linguistics Society of America (LSA) and Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics (SPCL) at the Anaheim Hilton on Jan. 5 and 6. The session included a presentation by Dr. Tom Spencer-Walters, chair of CSUN's Pan-African Studies Department.  Fred also presented a paper, "The double whammy:  linguistic minority writers, rhetorical strategies and salient grammatical features."  He has also been appointed co-chair of an advisory committee to the LSA, the Language in the School Curriculum Committee.
  • Joseph Mattson, an undergraduate Creative Writing major who just transferred from Pasadena City College, will have his one-act play titled "Go Tenderly, Dear Sun, O'er the Mount" produced at the 2007 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Cedar City, Utah.  The festival takes place Feb. 12-16.  Joseph writes, “At the festival, we will spend five days together working with each other and the actors on a production of the play, and on the last day of the festival there will be a staged reading for an audience of wide-ranging theater professionals: playwrights, actors, directors, producers, etc.  And I will receive a round table of critique and feedback from the big guns, so to speak.”

Competitions and Fellowships 

  • The 12th Annual CSU Graduate Conference, “Significations,” is accepting submissions for papers examining “the significations of language, word, and image, as well as literary representations of meaning and experience,” according to the conference flyer. The deadline for submissions is March 3. For submission guidelines, contact significations2007@yahoo.com.

Jobs and Opportunities 

  • The Los Angeles Mission College Learning Center is looking for tutors for one-on-one and small-group work. The pay is $14.49 per hour. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited four-year university with a major in the subject area being tutored.
