1. Announcements:
- Proposals for Community Service-Learning grants are due by 4 p.m. Dec. 1 in 435 Sierra Hall. The program is designed to encourage and assist faculty members with developing service-learning programs within the CSUN curriculum. The grants vary in size from $1,000 to $5,000. For more information on the grants, visit http://www.csun.edu/csl/fundingopps.htm.
2. Reminders:
- The 11th annual campus-wide Student Research and Creative Works Symposium will be held on Dec. 1 in the University Student Union’s Grand Salon. The symposium highlights achievements by undergraduate and graduate students across all academic disciplines. The symposium format permits a 10 minute oral presentation or a poster presentation. The deadline for submission of the application with abstract is 5 p.m. Nov. 10. Applications can be downloaded at www.csun.edu/graduatestudies. The abstract and application must be emailed as an attachment to graduate.studies@csun.edu. If you are interested in participating as a judge for student presentations, please contact Hedy Carpenter at extension 2138 or via email at hedy.carpenter@csun.edu.
- Each semester the English Department recognizes outstanding work by its students with a variety of awards. The Oliver W. Evans Writing Prize ($100) is awarded for the best piece of prose (critical or creative) submitted in an upper-division English course. The Eva Latif Writing Prize in Children’s Literature ($100) is awarded for the best piece of writing (critical or creative) by a student on the subject of children’s literature. The Henry Van Slooten Award ($500) is a new prize to be awarded to a lower-division student who has written an essay on any topic that best demonstrates “a passion for the English language.” Contact Evelyn McClave for submission requirements. The deadline for submissions for student awards is Nov. 13.
- The Richard Lid and Helen Lodge Scholarship
is an annual award of $500 given to a
graduate student enrolled in English
and/or Secondary Education to help pay
for fees for graduate work. The applicant
must be teaching in middle school or
secondary school or be on sabbatical.
Applications are available in the English
Department Office and are due Nov. 13.

3. Faculty/Student/Staff Achievements:
- Jackie Pugh Kogan presented a chapter from her novel-in-progress, Shells, at the Western Literature Association Conference in Boise, Idaho, on Oct. 28. Jackie also performed in the Association's annual Readers Theatre production.
- Jackie Stallcup delivered a lecture, "Paradox: How Children's Literature Changes and Endures," for the Opera for Educators program through LA Opera on Nov. 4. The "Opera for Educators" series explores opera from an interdisciplinary point of view; that day’s sessions were aimed at giving participating K-12 educators context for the upcoming performances of Hansel and Gretel.

Lectures and Other Events
- The American Indian Student Association will host its annual powwow on campus Nov. 11 (Saturday) and 12 (Sunday) on the East Lawn, at the corner of Nordhoff and Lindley. Admission is free. Saturday’s events run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday’s events run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Poet Daphne Gottlieb will be reading from her books Final Girl and Kissing Dead Girls at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in 120 Sierra Hall as part of the Distinguished Visiting Speakers Program. The CSUN Performance Ensemble will present at adaptation Final Girl at 8 p.m. Nov. 16-18 in the Studio Theater, Nordhoff Hall.
Jobs and Opportunities
- The Truth About The Fact: A National Journal of Literary Nonfiction is seeking submissions of nonfiction poetry and essays. The deadline is Dec. 15. For more information, visit http://www.thetruthaboutthefact.com.
