1. Announcements:

  • Our colleague Kent Baxter and his wife, Angela, have announced the birth of their son, Graeme Elizondo Baxter, on March 1, 2006. Congratulations to the happy parents!
  • Please announce to your classes that The Northridge Review is celebrating the publication of the Spring 2006 issue of the magazine. The Review will host a reading on March 24 in JR 319, starting at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served. All are welcome to attend.
  • Applications for Instructionally Related Activities (IRA) Funding for the 2006-2007 academic year must be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies, UH 265, by 5 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2006. Applications and operating policies can be downloaded at http://www.csun.edu/graduatestudies/08_IRA/01_GeneralInformation.html. Applications should be submitted to the College of Humanities for the Dean’s signature by noon.
  • On Tuesday, March 28, at 1 p.m. in JR 319, Harvard University’s Tom Jehn will conduct a workshop on how teachers with limited time can still give quality feedback on student’s expository essays. For additional information, email Irene Clark at irene.clark@csun.edu.
  • On Saturday, April 29, 2006, CSUN will host a Spring Composition Conference. Featured presenters will be Chris Anson, Sue McLeod, and Les Perelman, with a response from Carol Jago. Presentations will be followed by breakout sessions. There will be a book display, food, and entertainment. Registration information is available online at http://www.compositionconference.com. 2. Reminders:

  • Angelina Gonzales, Shone Kirkpatrick, Dan Murphy, and Jorge Ragni will give the first readings of the English Department’s annual Graduate Reading Series, on March 18, from 7 to 9 p.m., in CSUN’s Noski Auditorium (located at the corner of Etiwanda Avenue and Plummer Street).   • CSUN’s Sigma Tau Delta/ Honors in English Colloquium will take place on Tuesday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the University Student Union. Check-in will be in the Burbank Room from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. Panels will be held in Lakeview Terrace Rooms A, B, C, and D.   • Bob Chianese and Carl A. Maida are inviting members of the English Department to submit proposals for papers to be read at a special session of the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science—Pacific Division, at UC San Diego on Monday, June 19, 2006. Proposals must be emailed by April 15 to professors Chianese and Maida at the following addresses: cmaida@ucla.edu and robert.chianese@csun.edu. Contact Bob Chianese for additional information.

3. Faculty/Student Achievements:

  • Joseph Thomas’s book review “The New Workhorse of Children’s Literature: An Insider’s View of The Norton Anthology of Children’s Literature” was published recently by the Poetry Foundation at http://www.poetryfoundation.org/features/children.html.
  • Rick Mitchell recently presented a talk/workshop as part of the Playwriting Symposium at the Mid-America Theatre Conference in Chicago. Rick’s topic was “Diversity and Service-Learning in the Playwriting Classroom.”

Conferencess and Calls for Papers

  • The California State University Los Angeles Graduate Student Association is calling for papers for the 11 th Annual CSU Graduate Conference on May 20, 2006. The deadline for submitting 10-12 page papers is March 17, 2006. A copy of the call for papers is located on a bulletin board outside ST 712. Lectures and Other Events

  • On Tuesday, March 21, Dr. Ellen Eisenberg, Professor of American History at Willamette University, will deliver a lecture titled “The Limits of Civil Rights Ideology: Jewish Communal Responses to Japanese Evacuation.” She will speak about the response of Jewish community leaders to the incarceration of Japanese Americans in concentration camps during World War II. Her lecture will take place in the Whitsett Room, SH 451, at 7 p.m. To make a reservation, which is required, contact Jody Myers at (818) 677-3007.
  • Two activities are remaining in the Chicana/o Studies Department’s Spring Program. On March 23, from 7 to 9 p.m., faculty will read from their creative writings. On April 18, at 5 p.m., there will be a screening of the documentary Hey, Pancho. Both activities will be in the Presentation Room in Oviatt Library.   • The Huntington Library is presenting a series of programs under the title “African-American Culture & Arts: Dreams Fulfilled.” The four remaining programs in the series focus on composer and musician Harold Bruce Forsythe, the Little Rock Nine, the Mayme A. Jobs and Opportunities

  • CSUN’s Office of Undergraduate Studies is advertising for part-time lecturers to teach three-unit sections of University 100, Freshman Seminar, in Fall 2006. Lecturers must have at least an earned master’s degree and prior college or university teaching experience, among other qualifications. The application deadline is Friday, March 24, 2006.   • The Moreno Valley Campus in the Riverside Community College District is advertising to fill the tenure-track position of English Instructor, effective Fall 2006. A master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition is required. Post-secondary teaching experience is desired. Applications and supporting materials must be received by March 20. An advertisement for the position is posted on a bulletin board outside ST 712.
  • The Norco Campus in the Riverside Community College District is advertising to fill the tenure-track position of English Instructor, with a journalism emphasis, effective Fall 2006. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communication with a specialization in journalism and a master’s degree in English, literature, comparative literature, composition, or the equivalent are required. Post-secondary teaching experience is preferred. Applications and supporting materials must be received by March 20. An advertisement for the position is posted on a bulletin board outside ST 712.
  • The Department of English at California State University, Bakersfield, is looking to hire two full-time lecturers for Fall 2006—one lecturer in linguistics and the other lecturer in Renaissance non-dramatic literature and a secondary field, preferably Restoration and eighteenth-century English literature. A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment for both positions. Applications should be received by April 30, 2006. Advertisements for the two positions are posted on a bulletin board outside ST 712.
