I was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, where I earned a B.A. Honours degree in English at the University of the Witwatersrand. In the US, I completed an M.A. in English at San Diego State University, and a Ph.D. in English at the University of California, San Diego. My current teaching and research interests include rhetoric and composition studies, queer studies, critical theory, film, and African literatures. Prior to coming to CSUN, I taught at USC, South Gate High School, California State University Chico, The Ohio State University, and San Diego State University. I was a member of the first contingent of Teachers for a New Era faculty at CSUN, an initiative to reform and revitalize teacher education. In addition to teaching composition, composition theory, and other courses in the CSUN English Department, I teach in the CSUN Queer Studies program. My publications include articles in College Composition and Communication, Radical Teacher, and Genders, and the book Queer Race: Cultural Interventions in the Racial Politics of Queer Theory. I am now working on a book tentatively titled Upsetting Composition Commonplaces. (For links to my syllabi and publications, see my web site.)  I live in downtown Los Angles, and love being close to the opera and symphony. I also love movies, and so enjoy living in a city where I can see a different film every day without ever having to watch a mainstream Hollywood production!
