Out of respect to those concerned about the Coronavirus, and to our presenter who would have to travel here, the CSUN Center for Teaching and Learning is cancelling the Education on the Edge event scheduled for Thursday, March 12. The CTL is committed to bringing Dr. Lisa Dieker out at a future date, as her presentation is engaging, cutting edge, and of significant worth to our educational community. CSUN selected as one of five CSUs in the 2019-2020 TeachingWorks CSU Campus Fellowship

TeachingWorks, an organization at the University of Michigan, is focused on raising the quality of entry-level teaching by working with groups of teacher educators on five CSU campuses to support efforts to continue to develop practice-based, social-justice focused teacher preparation programs. Lead CSUN faculty member is Minsung Kwon, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Elementary Education. Core CSUN faculty members are Dr. Joyce Burstein (EED), Dr. David Kretschmer (EED), Dr. Greg Knotts (EED), Dr. Jenn Wolfe (SED), and Dr. Zhen Chai (SPED). Read more

From Apartheid to Today: Black Deaf Activism, Culture & Education

Apartheid to Today exhibit, with an academic poster and items from South Africa

Dr. Lissa Stapleton (Faculty, Department of Deaf Studies) along with students in Deaf Studies jointly presented this incredible exhibit at two national professional conferences in November of 2019: 1) The Association for the Study of Higher Education in Portland, Oregon and 2) The Council on International Education and Exchange in New York City. The exhibit was also displayed on the second floor of Manzanita Hall on the CSUN campus from October 1-November 18,2019. The exhibit, entitled From Apartheid to Today: Black Deaf Activism, Culture & Education, is a PhotoVoice Art Exhibit and highlights the community-focused work the students participated in while in South Africa exploring and learning more about equity, justice, resistance and activism. UC/CSU California Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning

In June 2019, the state of California established the UC/CSU California Collaborative for Neurodiversity and Learning as a new initiative focused on using emerging brain research to inform better practices for California’s children with learning differences. The goal of the Collaborative is to bring together resources and leading experts in neuroscience and K-12 education to strengthen educational support and new teaching methods for children with diverse learning needs, including children with dyslexia and literacy issues. ELPS faculty member Dimpal Jain, along with co-authors from UCLA Santiago Bernal Melendez and Alfred Herrera, have published a book with Michigan State University Press entitled Power to the Transfer: Critical Race Theory and a Transfer Receptive Culture.  The book focuses on the development and maintenance of a transfer receptive culture which is defined as an institutional commitment by a university to support transfer students of color. Dr. Diane Gehart Publishes on The MFT Core Competencies

Dr. Diane Gehart (Department of Educational Psychology & Counseling) has recently been published in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy. Her article, "The Condensed MFT Core Competencies: A Streamlined Approach for Measuring Student and Supervisee Learning Using the MFT Core Competencies", can be found online.
