International Week of Deaf People: Kaila Cruz

International Week of Deaf People, also known as Deaf Awareness Week, is an initiative that was established by World Federation of the Deaf and first launched in Rome, Italy in 1958. The goal of the initiative is to celebrate Deaf people. This celebration takes place annually in September. The theme for 2023’s International week of Deaf People is A World Where Deaf People Everywhere Can Sign Anywhere. In support of International Week of Deaf People, the Michael D. Eisner College of Education and the department of Deaf Studies is proud to highlight Kaila Cruz, one of our all-star students majoring in Deaf Studies.  Read more

The Deaf Studies Department celebrated the International Week of Deaf People from September 18 through September 24. The theme for this year was A World Where Deaf People Can Sign Anywhere! Deaf Studies Hosts New Student Orientation

The Department of Deaf Studies was excited to host the very first New Student Orientation Event for incoming first time freshman and transfer students on August 22, 2023. This event gave students the opportunity to meet Deaf Studies Faculty and Staff as well as learn about the department and what to expect as new students at CSUN. The orientation included an amazing alumni panel, students were able to take a tour of the University Library and attended presentations on advisement, career pathways and best research practices to have a successful journey here at CSUN! Lisa Hermatz, a member of the American Sign Language Teachers, has taught college level ASL for over 20 years for Pierce College & Glendale Community College. She is delighted to be joining the Deaf Studies family as an Assistant Professor here at California State University, Northridge after teaching as an adjunct for two years. Read more

Lee Ann Tang is a new faculty member in the Department of Deaf Studies. Growing up in New Jersey with a large signing family, Lee Ann Tang was adopted from China to the United States at age five. She identifies herself as an Asian-American, Chinese adoptee, and Deaf woman. Read more

Jeff Pollock & Christine Mitchell Address Critical Need for Interpreters

Jeff Pollock, with significant support from and coordination by staff interpreter Christine Mitchell, recently completed an innovative project funded by our very own RSCA grant to address a critical need on the CSU Northridge campus, and in the Greater Los Angeles community, for more qualified American Sign Language/English (ASL/E) interpreters. Black Deaf History Month

The Black Signers Club hosted three virtual Black Deaf History month events. This is the first year the club has hosted an international event. They invited two Black Deaf community members, Lydia Gratis and Romeo Belcher, from Ireland to share more about their thoughts on the hidden expectations, challenges and acts of resistance needed to be successful within the Deaf education system in Ireland.  Read more
