Financial Support for Special Education Credential and Master's Students
The Department of Special Education has several grant supported programs that provide stipends to students to assist with tuition, books, and other program costs as described below.

Accelerated Collaborative Teacher Residency (ACT-R) Program
ACT-R is supported by a Teacher Quality Partnership Grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment ACT (2010-2015). ACT-R is an 18-month Credential/Master’s Degree Program offered collaboratively by CSUN and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). The program prepares teachers to serve students with disabilities in high need schools in the credential areas of mild/moderate disabilities, moderate/severe disabilities, deaf and hard of hearing, and early childhood special education. Candidates obtain a credential in one year through full-time study as a teacher in residence and sign a service agreement to teach in LAUSD for a minimum of three years. Graduates complete their Master’s Degree while on-the-job. Candidates in ACT-R are eligible for a stipend of up to $30,000. For more information, contact Dr. Nancy Burstein at email@example.com.

Project PREP: Preparing Resourceful and Effective Professionals
Project PREP, supported by a federally funded personnel preparation grant from the U.S. Department of Education (2011-2014), is designed to address the critical shortage of qualified special educators from diverse backgrounds to serve learners ages 5 – 22 having moderate, severe and multiple disabilities, including deaf-blindness. This project is implemented in partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District, Simi Valley Unified School District, and other districts within CSUN’s service area. The program is designed to prepare pre-service candidates, interns (on-the-job teachers) and undergraduate students who are participating in the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP). Upon completion, candidates will earn a Preliminary Credential in Moderate/Severe Disabilities with an English Language (EL) authorization. Stipends of up to $7,000 per year (for maximum of 2 years) are available. Funds are also available to purchase technology for instructional use, and to attend state and national conference. Technology Enhanced Culturally-Responsive (TEC) Intern Program for Secondary Special Educators in Urban Schools
The TEC Intern Program, supported by a federally funded personnel preparation grant from the U.S. Department of Education (2007-2012), is designed for special education interns who are pursuing a credential in mild/moderate disabilities. Candidates progress through a standards-based program that is designed to meet the needs of on-the-job teachers through enhanced technology and coursework the focuses on a culturally responsive curriculum in serving diverse urban and English language learners with mild/moderate disabilities. TEC interns must sign a service agreement committing to teach as a special education teacher for twice the number of semesters they receive funding and attend workshops focusing on technology tools and applications for the K-12 classroom.
