Teacher Preparation and Research in Special Education. Research interests include teacher preparation in urban schools, inclusive practices for learners with mild/moderate disabilities, alternative certification programs.
Dr. Burstein has had extensive experience serving students with mild-moderate disabilities as a special education teacher and resource specialist. Prior to her position at CSU, Northridge, Dr. Burstein was Director of Elementary and Special Education at Mount St. Mary's College and Field Supervisor at the Teacher Education Laboratory at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Burstein has directed or co-directed numerous grant projects. These include federally funded personnel preparation projects to develop model credential programs for special educators and state-funded projects that support alternative preparation and induction programs for teachers serving students with disabilities. Dr. Burstein serves as Director of the Accelerated Collaborative Teacher (ACT) Preparation Program, and award-winning program recognized as exemplifying school-university collaboration in teacher education. Dr. Burstein has worked collaboratively with the California Department of Education (CDE) for statewide reform in special education and serves a member on the Board of Institutional Reviewers (BIR) for the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. She has published widely in teacher education and special education journals, with research focusing on the recruitment, preparation, and retention of urban-school teachers and inclusive education for students with disabilities.
