How better to start the Center for Teaching and Learning's (CTL) inaugural Education on the Edge speaker series than by pairing an A-list educator with an A-list celebrity? On October 2, 2013, Dr. Diane Ravitch, former Assistant Secretary of Education and renowned educational historian, professor, and activist, spoke at CSUN about her new best-selling book, Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Dangers to America's Public Schools. In addition, award-winning screenwriter and actor, Mr. Matt Damon, introduced Dr. Ravitch. Matt Damon is a strong supporter of public schooling, and his mother, Dr. Nancy Carlsson-Paige—who was in the audience—is a former teacher and early childhood professor.

Dr. Wendy Murawski, Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning, stated, "This sold-out event drew over 750 people, who were energized by what they heard. We were honored to have Dr. Ravitch and Mr. Damon. Looking ahead, we are equally excited to welcome Dr. Linda Darling Hammond and Dr. Lou Cozolino to continue this series in the spring."
