1. How is the Intern Program different from the regular/traditional credential program?
An intern receives support from a university supervisor, and a support provider at their school site. The principal at the school site selects the support provider who will be working with each intern. The university selects the University Supervisor. Additional help is given in the form of advisement, and in seminars that are held during each semester of student (intern) teaching. For those students who have not been in a Pre-intern program, support is offered new interns at the beginning of the school year, by university mentors assigned to work with Interns through our S.O.S. (Survival Outreach Support) program. Interns receive stipends each semester upon verification of the successful completion of coursework, and in addition, RICA workshops are offered each semester.

2. When do I apply to the program?
As soon as you receive a full-time assignment with a public school district with whom we are affiliated, and have verification of subject matter competency (MSAT/CSET/Liberal Studies waiver) you can request an appointment for applying to the program. We accept applicants throughout the summer, and the school year.

3. What are the qualifications and how do I apply?
You must be teaching full-time in a multiple subject classroom in a public school that has an agreement with our program. Additionally, you must have passed a subject matter competency examination (MSAT or CSET) or have a liberal studies waiver that has been cleared through our Credential Program. If both of these conditions have been met, contact our Administrative Assistant, at 818/677-2621, for an appointment with the Intern Coordinator to begin the application process. Bring with you copies of the following: MSAT or CSET results or a copy of your liberal studies waiver; CBEST (full report); and if you are in the Credential Program at CSUN, a copy of your program evaluation. If you are not currently in the Credential Program, bring in our Multiple Subject Intern Credential Program Application with all the items listed on the application. Our office will submit two applications to the Credential Preparation Office for you: one for the Credential Program, and one for the MS Intern Credential. After you are accepted in the Credential Program you can apply to Admissions and Records for acceptance into the Post baccalaureate program.

4. What is a C-19 letter and how do I get one?

5. What is the advantage of an intern credential?
An intern credential verifies that you have subject matter competency. An intern credential is good for two years, during which all coursework towards the Preliminary Credential will need to be completed.

6. May I transfer to the Intern Program if I have already done coursework in the regular credential program?
Yes, you may. We will apply to have you transferred into the program, and when the Credential Office evaluates all of your coursework we will develop an Individual Advisement Plan for you that will list all the courses you will need to take to complete the program. Some additional coursework may be required.

10. When and how do I do student teaching?
You will student teach in your own classroom. Your assigned Support Provider and University Supervisor will observe you throughout the semester of student teaching. They will complete a document that evaluates your progress, which they will submit at the end of the student teaching semester. Student teaching begins halfway through the semester in which you are enrolled to take this course. During each semester of student/intern teaching you will be taking a seminar in which you will be developing a Professional Portfolio (See Professional Portfolio) that will be used to provide your Support Provider and University Supervisor with more information about your work in the classroom. Student teaching occurs throughout the program, but before the final semester of student teaching you must receive a clearance from the Credential Preparation Office in order to qualify (see FAQ’s #11). The application for the final semester of student teaching is distributed to all interns through the Intern Office.

11. When do I apply for student/intern teaching?
You apply for student teaching in the last semester before you graduate. Even though student teaching is done throughout the program, you need only fill out the application and submit it to the Credential Preparation Office prior to the last semester of student teaching. You can not begin your final semester of student teaching without clearance from the Credential Preparation Office.
