Elaine Adelman, M.A., California State University, Northridge

Ms. Adelman is a Lecturer as well as the Coordinator of the Multiple Subject Internship Credential Program at California State University, Northridge, a position she has held for seven years. Ms. Adelman has recently retired after thirty years of teaching elementary school. She has a B.A. degree from Brooklyn College, and two M.A. degrees from CSUN: one in reading instruction, and the other in educational administration. As a Writing Project and Literature Project fellow, Ms. Adelman is most interested in research regarding reading comprehension and writing instruction. She teaches seminars in conjunction with student teaching, as well as methods courses in reading and writing for elementary teachers.

Susan Belgrad, Ed.D., Vanderbilt University

Dr. Susan Belgrad  joined the faculty in 2003, coming to Northridge from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois where she served as an Associate Professor of Education and Associate Dean/Program Coordinator of the Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership.  Having been a special educator in an elementary setting for many years, Dr. Belgrad worked in higher education in early childhood, elementary, secondary and special education. Dr. Belgrad holds a B.A. in child development from Northern Illinois University, M.A.T. in special education from Northeastern Illinois University and and Ed.D. in educational administration from Vanderbilt University. Her teaching and research interests are in authentic assessment, learner-centered schools, educational technology--web-based learning and brain-compatible learning.

Classes that Dr. Belgrad teaches: EED 501, 601, 579 and 681.Her office hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00-3:30 and other times by appointment.

Raymond Brie, Ph.D., Arizona State University

Dr. Raymond Brie (vita) joined the faculty in 2002, coming to Northridge from Oxnard College (CA) where he was the Dean of Instruction and Innovation. He previously served as an Assistant Professor of curriculum and instruction at Texas Christian University and as Chair and Professor of Teacher Education at California State University Bakersfield. Dr. Brie holds a B.A. in elementary education from Arizona State University, M.A. in elementary mathematics education from Arizona State University, and taught in grades 1, 2, 7, and 8 in Arizona for 10 years before completing his doctoral studies. He is the past president of the California Mathematics Council, Central Section. His teaching and research interests are in mathematics education, infusing technology in teacher education and promoting teacher leadership. He also has an extensive knowledge and experience working with grant projects related to mathematics education and teacher education.

Joyce Burstein, Ed.D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Joyce Burstein (vita) joined the faculty in 2002, coming to Northridge from University of California at Los Angeles where she served as clinical faculty in The Teacher Education Program. Dr. Burstein holds a B.A. in history from UCLA, an M.A. in Education with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction from California State University Northridge and an Ed.D. in Teacher Education and Leadership from UCLA. She has worked as a classroom teacher in Los Angeles Unified School District for 15 years. Her teaching and research interests are in social studies and multicultural education, the arts, writing, teacher networking and induction. She is currently teaching 2 periods of history at Sepulveda MS as a pilot for the professor-in-residence position as part of Teachers for a New Era.

Dr. Tae Chang (vita) joined the faculty in 2002, coming to Northridge from Richardson Independant School District where he was a classroom teacher. Dr. Chang holds a B.A. in elementary Education from Stephen F. Austin State University, M.A. in educational administration from Texas A&M, Commerce. He taught in grades 4, 7, 8 and 9 in Richardson for 6 years prior to completing his doctoral studies. His teaching and research interests are in educational technology and Asian-American studies.

Sandra Chong, Ph.D., University of Southern California

Dr. Sandra Chong joined the faculty in 1996, coming to Northridge from California State University, Los Angeles where she served as an Assistant Professor of Education. Dr. Chong has served as a classroom teacher, Bilingual Coordinator and a Multicultural Advisor before teaching at Institutions of Higher Education as an assistant and associate professor. Dr. Chong holds a B.A. in Vocal Performing Arts from University of Southern California, M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction in Education from University of Southern California, and Ph.D. in Language and Literacy in Education from University of Southern California. Her teaching and research interests are in language and literacy development—English language, emergent and home literacy development—and teacher education.

Irene Calzada Cota, Ph.D., Stanford University

Dr. Irene Calzada Cota earned her B.A. degree in English from California State University, Northridge, M.A. in Foreign Language and Second Language Learning from Stanford University, and Ph.D.in the area of Curriculum and Instruction from Stanford University.  She also earned a Certificate In The Teaching Of English As A Second Language from UCLA.  She has worked as a Title VII, Bilingual Coordinator and as a bilingual classroom teacher.  Dr. Calzada Cota joined the faculty in 1994 and teaches seminars in conjunction with student teaching, as well as methods courses in language arts, social studies, and ESL.  She is most interested in research regarding parental involvement and the school academic success of English language learners.

 

 

 

COLLIER, Shartriya

Shartriya Collier is currently a Lecturer of English Language Development at California State University, Northridge. She has been an educator for 8 years. Ms. Collier has taught a variety of grades ranging from teaching first grade in New York City to teaching creative writing to high school students in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She earned her BA in Spanish from Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana. Shartriya received her Master’s degree in Bilingual/Bicultural Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently a doctoral candidate in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Others Languages) at Temple University in Philadelphia.
Ms. Collier has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Central America, and Europe. Her research interests include bilingual women and entrepreneurship, biliteracy development for second generation immigrants, and gender and second language acquisition. August 5th was the official release date for the book “Gender and the Language of Religion” which contains a chapter she wrote regarding Senegalese immigrant women entrepreneurs and Islam. An additional article based upon the same study, “Communication Strategies among Senegalese Women Immigrants, Language Use, Acquisition and Cultural Maintenance: A Case Study in an African Hair-braiding Shop” presented at the Harvard Conference on African linguistics, was also accepted for publication in the conference proceedings “Trends in African Linguistics”. Ms. Collier is dedicated to the development and advancement of multicultural education and conflict resolution amongst students of color.

Maria Czech, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Maria Czech, assistant professor, joined the faculty in 2000. She holds a B.S. in Social Sciences from Mary Manse College, Toledo, Ohio, and earned her M. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and Ph. D. in Urban Studies in Education at UCLA. Dr. Czech has served as classroom teacher, science education specialist, and lecturer/clinical field supervisor at UCLA’s Center X. Her teaching interests are equitable practices in teaching mathematics and science, multicultural education, gender studies, and fostering learning communities in higher education.

Dr. Czech is currently teaching Methods in Teaching Elementary Mathematics, and is serving as field coordinator for the ACT program.

Cynthia Desrochers, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Cynthia Desrochers (vita) joined the faculty in 1983, coming to Northridge from UCLA where she taught in the lab school for 8 years, as well as taught credential courses. Prior to UCLA, she taught grades 5-6 for 3 years in LAUSD (Alta Loma School) as part of UCLA's Project Linkage. Dr. Desrochers holds BA, M. Ed. and Ed.D. degrees from UCLA in English, Curriculum, and the Study of Organizational Change, respectively. She also earned both K-12 Multiple Subjects and Administrative Services Credentials from UCLA. Dr. Desrochers is the director of CSUN's Instructional Development Center, CELT. She is the past president of the CSU Faculty Development Council, as well as a member of the Core Governance Committee of the Professional Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education. Dr. Desrochers was awarded CSUN's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1991. Her teaching and research interests include: organizational development and change; teaching and learning in higher education; student engagement; the biology of the brain's affect on learning; clinical supervision, peer coaching, and teacher evaluation; small-group learning; and elements of effective Instruction.

Lynn Gordon, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Lynn Gordon has been teaching at CSUN since 1996, originally as an adjunct faculty member and currently as a full-time assistant professor.  She holds both a B.A. in Liberal Studies and M.A. in Education from Occidental College, and a Ph.D. in Education (with a specialization in Learning and Instruction) from UCLA.  She taught elementary school for fourteen years, frequently serving as both a mentor teacher and  supervising teacher for CSUN and UCLA student teachers.  She was an instructor with UCLA's Teacher Education Laboratory (now Center X) for five years.  Dr. Gordon's research interests are in teacher efficacy and classroom management, twins and school separation, teacher decision making, student motivation, and reading instruction.  Dr. Gordon's is CSUN's Service Learning Coordinator for Korea LA, an organization that trains literacy volunteers to work with struggling readers in LAUSD public schools.  She also is the founder and chair of the International Reading Association's Phonics Special Interest Group.


Office hours for fall semester 2005 : Tuesdays 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesdays 11:30 to 1:00, and after class and by appointment. Classes taught: EED 500 "Foundations of Teaching" EED 520 "Reading in the Elementary School," and EED 577 "Language Arts and ESL."

Dr. Hertzog holds a B.S. in General Studies from the University of Southern California, M. S. in Education with a Reading Concentration from the University of Southern California, and Ph.D. in Education from the University of Southern California.  She was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California.  She served as a classroom teacher and reading specialist in the Los Angeles Unified School District.  Dr. Hertzog holds the California Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential and serves as the Coordinator of the Integrated Teacher Education Program at CSUN.

Marilyn Joshua, Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University

is an Associate Professor in the Department of Elementary Education, California State University, Northridge. She earned a B.A. from U.C.L.A. and M.A.and Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate University. She teaches credential and graduate level courses in reading/language arts. She is one of the first authors in the country to publish rewritten classic children's stories featuring Children of Color (Cinderella and the Glass Slipper, Snow White, The Original Three Little Pigs Retold, and The Adventures of Curious Eric: Learning Concepts). Her scholarly interest and research includes journal articles with a focus on: Transcultural reading and writing opportunities in the classroom; "best practices" instructional strategies for teachers who are reluctant to teach writing; and students as authors.

Phillip Kligman, Ph.D., Claremont Graduate University

Dr. Kligman earned a B.A. in English from California State University Northridge and a M. S. in Reading from Pepperdine University.  He holds the California Standard Elementary Teaching Credential, California Administrative Services Credential, California Reading and Language Arts Specialist Credential and serves as the Coordinator at CSUN. Dr. Kligman serves as the Director of CSUN’s Los Angeles Times Literacy Center and the America’s Challenge and Consultant and Literacy Trainer for The Wonder of Reading Program.  His research and professional interests include literacy tutoring and brain compatible learning. Teach credential and graduate courses in literacy. David Kretschmer, Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. David Kretschmer joined the faculty in 1987 as a Lecturer after teaching science for several years at the high school and middle school levels and serving as a math and science specialist at the elementary level. He earned a B.S. in Biology/Science Education from Oregon State University, an M. Ed. in Curriculum and the Study of Schooling from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Education, also from UCLA. Dr. Kretschmer coordinates the Accelerated Collaborative Teacher (ACT) Preparation Program for Multiple Subject candidates. His research interests include teacher’s science pedagogical content knowledge, student’s alternative conceptions and conceptual change in the sciences, and teacher education.

Courses taught recently include LRS 200 and LRS 396GW in ITEP, E ED 565M and E ED 565S in the ACT Program, and E ED 648 in the MA Program offered through the Department of Elementary Education.

Nancy O'Rode, Ph.D., University of California, Santa Barbara

Dr. Nancy O’Rode joined the faculty in 2004, coming to Northridge from the University of California, Santa Barbara where she served as a postdoctoral researcher for the Center for Equity in Mathematics and Science Education and Project RENEW, an NSF-funded teacher leadership and renewal project. Dr. O’Rode holds a B.S. in biology from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, an M.A. in Educational Psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Ph.D. in Education with an emphasis in Teaching and Learning from UCSB. Her classroom teaching experience spans grades 4 – 11 in California, Spain, and Kenya. As a Peace Corps volunteer, she taught pre-service teachers in the Fiji Islands. Her teaching and research interests encompass algebraic thinking, equity in mathematics education, teacher leadership, and mathematics curriculum and instruction.

Dr. O’Rode teaches EED 472, 565M, and 643. Her office hours are Tuesdays 3 – 5 pm, Wednesdays 3 – 4 pm, and by appointment.

Sabrina Peck, Ph. D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Sabrina Peck joined the faculty in 1990, coming from Los Angeles City College, where she was a professor of English/ ESL. Dr. Peck holds a B.A. in social relations from Harvard University. She earned an M.A. in teaching English as a second language, and a Ph.D. in applied linguistics at UCLA. As a VISTA volunteer, she taught kindergarten in the U.S. Virgin Islands. After graduation she taught bilingual (Spanish-English) first grade as well as ESL in the Boston Public Schools. Her research interests all center around second language acquisition and methods of teaching English language learners.

Classes taught recently are EED 570, 577, 610, 625, 675 and 697 as well as Linguistics 417, 521 and 525 and the ITEP freshman seminar. Dr. Peck is the Coordinator of the Linguistics/TESL Program in the

Thomas Potter, Ed.D., University of California, Los Angeles

Dr. Thomas Potter joined the faculty in 1968 coming from Southwest Regional Laboratory for Educational Research and Development in Los Angeles, where he was a Member of the Professional Staff. He holds a B. A. in Education from UCSB, an MA in Educational Psychology, with a minor in Educational Administration from UCLA and an Ed. D. in Curriculum and Instruction, emphasis in Reading and Language Development also granted by UCLA. He holds a California Life Elementary Teaching Credential and a California Elementary School Administration Credential. After six years in elementary school teaching (grades 3-6) in the Santa Barbara Unified School District, he taught bilingual (German / English) reading and language arts at the John F. Kennedy Schule (Klasse 3-8) in Berlin-Zehlendorf, Germany for three years. He was also the curriculum coordinator for the elementary (Vorschule - Klasse 6) division of the Kennedy Schule. He taught in the Summer Academic Program for Elementary School Students (SAPESS) at CSUN for twelve years.

Classes taught recently (2000 - 2004) at CSUN include EED 520, EED 581ST, EED 501 and UNIV 100, (Seminar for entering freshman in study skills and reading / language development) offered under the direction of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies.

Nancy Prosenjak, Ph.D., Kent State University

Dr. Nancy Prosenjak (vita) joined the faculty in 2000, coming to Northridge from the Metropolitan State College of Denver, Colorado, where she served as Assistant Professor of English. Dr. Prosenjak holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Kent State University, a M. S. in Reading and a M. S. in Gifted Education from Youngstown State University, and a B.S. in Education from The Ohio State University. She taught elementary and middle school for 16 years, serving as classroom teacher, Reading Specialist, and Coordinator of Gifted Programs. Her teaching and research interests include literacy, children’s/adolescent literature, issues of gender/social justice, and teacher education.
Dr. Prosenjak is currently serving the department as Graduate Coordinator and course coordinator for student teaching seminars; she serves the university as a member of the Teachers for a New Era steering committee. Classes that Dr. Prosenjak teaches include EED 520 Reading in the Elementary School, EED 621 Language, Literacy, and Culture across the Curriculum, and EED 628 Language and Literacy Programs in the Master’s in Language and Literacy specialization.

John M. Reveles is a recent addition to the CSUN faculty from the Ph.D. program at UCSB. He holds a B.A. in Social Work from Colorado State University and an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. In addition, John worked as an Elementary School Teacher in the Lennox School District for 3 years before pursuing his Ph.D. His current research interests include: development of scientific literacy in elementary school settings; sociocultural influences on students' academic identity; equity of access issues in science education; qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Dr. Richard Malcolm Sharp joined the faculty in 1968. He holds a B.A. from University of Pennsylvania in chemistry and mathematics, and a Doctorate from Boston University in math education. Dr. Sharp who is Professor Emeritus at California State University, Northridge, is the author of numerous books and articles on topics related to the use of computers in education, and math. Vicki Sharp, Ph.D., St. Louis University

Dr. Vicki F. Sharp joined the faculty in 1970. She holds a B.A. from Washington University, St. Louis, and a Ph.D. from St. Louis University. Dr. Sharp who is Professor Emeritus at California State University, Northridge, is the author of over thirty-five books and numerous articles on topics related to the use of computers in education, statistics, and math. Some of her recent popular books include Computer Education for Teachers, Fifth Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2004); Make it with PowerPoint, Make it with Office, Make It with Inspiration 7.6 (Macintosh and Windows versions) (Visions Technology in Education, 2004). Connie White, Ed.D., Indiana University

Ms. Connie White earned a B.A. in Psychology. from Acadia University (Canada), B. Ed. Elementary Education and Reading from Acadia University, M. Ed. in Reading from Mount Saint Vincent University (Canada), M.A. in Language and Literacy from Mount Saint Vincent University, and Ed.D. (ABD) in Language Education from Indiana University.  Ms. White completed additional graduate studies at the University of South Australia and the University of Exeter. She was an Instructor at Mount Saint Vincent University and Indiana University.  She served as an elementary classroom teacher in Canada.  Her teaching and research interests are reading and language education, gender studies, and critical literacy.

Renee Ziolkowska, Ed.D., University of Pennsylvania


Dr. Renee Ziolkowska joined the faculty in 2004, coming from Neumann College in Aston, PA where she served as an Assistant Professor of Education.  Dr. Ziolkowska worked as a classroom teacher and a reading specialist.  Dr. Ziolkowska earned her B.S. from Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia, PA, M.A. from Villanova University, Villanova, PA, and her Ed.D. in Reading, Writing and Literacy from the University of Pennsylvania. Her teaching and research interests center around reading.  She is also very interested in teacher research and early intervention for struggling readers.


Office hours for Fall 2005: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-3:30 PM and by appointment. Dr. Ziolkowska teaches: EED 477A - Literacy Instruction for Diverse Learners and EED 520 - Reading in the Elementary School and Sse also supervises ITEP student teachers.
