The
University recognizes that undergraduate students may need to repeat
one or more courses in order to fulfill degree requirements. Before
repeating any courses, students should review the following information
along with the catalog information on repeating courses. If this
information does not answer all of your questions regarding course
repeats, contact your advisor, or use the
online advisement system.
A maximum of 15
semester units of CSU Northridge coursework in which a student earned
a C- or lower grade may be repeated for the purpose of excluding grades
(or "grade forgiveness") from the computation of a student’s
overall GPA. For example, say that you take a 3 unit course for the
first time and receive an "F". The following semester you repeat this
course and receive a "B". If you have repeated less than 12 units
prior to this repeat, the "F" will not be included in the calculation
of your grade point average, but the "B" will be included.

If you have already
repeated 15 units of coursework, you may still repeat other courses.
However, in this case, both grades will be included in your grade
point average calculation. For example, say that you take a 3 unit
course for the first time and receive an "F". The following semester
you repeat this course and receive a "B". If you have already repeated
15 units prior to this repeat, both a 3 unit "F" and a 3 unit "B"
will be included in the calculation of your grade point average.

Only one repeat
per course is permitted for the purpose of improving the grade. Grades
assigned as part of a disciplinary action may not be forgiven. On
the third or subsequent enrollment in a course, permission of the
associate dean of the college is necessary. For example, say you take
a 3 unit course and receive a "F". You repeat the course the next
semester and receive a "D". Unfortunately, this course is in your
senior program and you are required to have a "C" or better. So, you
repeat the course again with the permission of the associate dean,
this time receiving a "C". Assuming that you have not yet repeated
15 units of coursework, the original "F" will not be included in the
computation of your grade point average. However, both the "D" and
the "C" will be included.

Yes, even if a
grade is replaced in the calculation of your grade point average,
it will still show up on your transcript.
