ART 202. INTRODUCTION TO VIDEO/DIGITAL ART (3)
Prerequisite: ART 200. Introduction to the uses of time-based media as a means of personal expression. Investigations into basic concepts in digital media will result in short artistic statements presented in video/digital format. 6 hours lab.

Upper division

ART 300. DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES IN AR T (3)
Prerequisite: ART 200. Exploration of the use of digital media in art and design. Provides practical experience in designing digital media products. 9 hours lab.

Expanded description: Develop fundamental understandings of time-based digital technologies that can be used in art, design, audio, multimedia, gaming and other fields. Covers video/audio synthesis, video/audio sampling, shooting & editing video, mechanical, gestural and narrative approaches. With 302, this course provides a foundation for further study in video:digital art. You should have access to a video camera (any type is OK, DV is best). Software: FinalCut Pro, Plogue Bidule + limited use of After Effects, Cinema 4D. [Sample Syllabus]

ART 302. VIDEO/DIGITAL ART (3-3)
Prerequisite: ART 200. Studies into artistic concepts and technologies involved in the creation of video art, and digital time-based art forms. Investigations into digital imaging, non-linear compositing and visual effects result in the creation of short artistic statements presented in video/digital format. 6 hours lab.

Expanded description: This course is designed to serve animators, graphic designers, filmmakers, artists and others seeking an overview of digital motion art approaches and technologies with an emphasis on post-production techniques. Especially useful for students interested in motion graphics. You should have access to a video camera (any type is OK, DV is best). Software: AfterEffects. Note: A practical prerequisite test covering Photoshop & Illustrator is usually given on the first day of class. [Sample Syllabus]

Art 352. EXPERIMENTAL VISUAL EFFECTS
Prerequisite: ART 302. Conceptualization and production of visual effects. 6 hours lab. Software: After Effects.

ART 402. ADVANCED VIDEO/DIGITAL ART (3-3)
Prerequisite: ART 302. Advanced studies into video/digital art involve exploration into a broad range of artistic concepts and visual technologies utilized in video/digital media, and time-based art forms. Investigation into art software applications and experimental methods lead to the production and refinement of artistic statements presented in video/ digital format. 6 hours lab.

Expanded description: Students must be highly motivated and already possess technical and motion skills. Along with Art 302, Art 300 is a highly recommended prerequisite. [Sample Syllabus]

MUSIC 496H/HL SOUND DESIGN FOR MULTIMEDIA (3)
Pre-requisite: MUS 191 or ART 200 or permission of instructor. A practical exploration of techniques for recording, synthesizing, and processing sound for multimedia presentation suitable for both musicians and non-musicians. Two hours lecture/ Two hours Lab. [Note: this course is in the music department and counts as an upper division elective.]

Expanded description: The course will explore the physical aspects of sound, digital audio, sample manipulation, and synthesis, as well as the basic aural properties of sound and approaches to designing the evolution of sound over time. Various multimedia presentation modes will be explored including sound diffusion in the concert hall, installations, CD-ROMs/video games, film, and the Internet. The course will also include listening to and writing analyses of works from a variety of multimedia genres, and reading and discussion in the aesthetics of electronically created art. Software: Pro Tools Free and others.

Graduate

ART 520. STUDIO PROBLEMS VIDEO/DIGITAL ART (3-3-3-3)
Investigation into artistic studio problems in video/digital art. Explorations lead to resolution of personal artistic statements. Increasing complexity in concept, media, and presentation is required in the sequence of course work. Class meets 6 hours per week in supervised studio work. Available for repeat credit.

Expanded description: Generally covers one in a series of four revolving topics: modernism and its discontents, research & inquiry, teaching & leadership, leadership opportunity. Discussion and project based. Does not cover software techniques. [Sample Syllabus]

ART 620. ADVANCED STUDIO PROBLEMS: VIDEO/DIGITAL ART (3-3-3-3)
Prerequisite: ART 502 or equivalent. Investigation into advanced concepts involved in the production of video/digital art forms. The resolution of problems dealing with media, technique and presentation will be explored. Increasing complexity and evidence of conceptual depth is required in the sequence of course work. Class meets 6 hours per week in supervised studio work

ART 690 A-Z. M.F.A. STUDIO (3-3-3-3)
Prerequisites: M.F.A. Classified status, permission of instructor and graduate advisor. Investigation of advanced artistic problems leading to a highly specialized and personal aesthetic.
