On May 7th the College of Science and Mathematics held its second awards ceremony in recognition of the many achievements by its faculty and staff. Collectively, the College generates over 3,500 FTES annually, has about 2,000 science and mathematics majors, and receives well over half of all external funds for research at CSUN. The College of Science and Mathematics is widely recognized for the quality of its graduates and for its ground breaking applied and basic research. The College’s extraordinary achievements are only made possible by an exceptionally dedicated, hardworking, and creative faculty and staff. Going the extra mile seems to be the norm. The goal of the new College Awards, which will be an annual event, is to express publicly our deep appreciation.

Six categories of excellence were recognized: Early Career Research, Research, Teaching, Part-Time Teaching, Service, and Staff. The winners were selected by the College Scholarship Committee from among names nominated by faculty members. At the luncheon ceremony each award winner received a $1,000 check and an engraved plaque. Attendees included the winners, their invited guests, and the Dean’s staff. The winners were Dr. Gang Lu (Physics and Astronomy; Early Career Research), Dr. Al Sethuraman (Mathematics; Research), Dr. Katherine Stevenson (Mathematics; Teaching), Dr. Christine Spengel (Mathematics; Part-Time Teaching), Dr. Mary Rosen (Mathematics; Service), and Richard Spengel, Myron Hawthorne, Robert Rojas (Science Shop, Service). It was truly an honor to be able to recognize their outstanding contributions to the College. In his remarks, the Dean expressed how fortunate he felt to be leading such a wonderful group of colleagues.
