Position Opening

California State University, Northridge. The Department of Sociology is seeking applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, in the Social Welfare Option, to begin Fall, 2008. Ph.D. or D.S.W. in Social Work, or Ph.D. in Sociology with M.S.W. in Social Work are required.

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching general social welfare courses and social work practice courses. Candidate specialty areas in social work may include, but are not limited to: welfare reform, social gerontology, child welfare, and life course development. The position requires a commitment to excellence in teaching, sensitivity to issues of race, gender, and ethnicity, as well as research productivity. Work experience in social work and/or social welfare is preferred. Teaching and research experience are desirable. The ability to relate to community agencies to arrange field placements, supervise interns, and coordinate the social welfare option in the future.

Applicants must demonstrate interest, experience, and competence in teaching, scholarly research, and professional and community service or must show strong potential in each of these areas. Grant writing experience desirable. Candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their specialty and other courses as needed, normally teach 12 units per semester, conduct and publish research, pursue grants and external funding and participate in university service.

CSUN is a learning centered university and candidates are expected to have a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate. At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States. Review of applications will begin on February 29, 2008 and continue until the position is filled. The university is located in the San Fernando Valley and is the third largest university in the LA area serving a multiethnic student body of over 34,000. The Sociology Department has approximately 1,200 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students.
