Spotlight on Students: Akiko Murai

Q. How did you first learn about the profession of social work?

A. The first time I learned about the profession of social work was when I read information that interested me about persons who helped in problem-solving in the area of domestic violence issues and child abuse cases.

Q. What have been the most valuable aspects of your educational experiences so far in the CSUN MSW program?

A. In my Human Behavior and the Social Environment I class, I am learning the basic foundation of how people develop, how that affects their behavior, and why people behave the way that they do. I like learning about the diversity of perspectives in different populations of people, and I hope to use my training to focus on creating a bridge between Deaf and Hearing individuals.

Q. What do you hope to do after you graduate?

A. The client population I would like to work with is deaf people who have hearing parents and/or deaf parents who have hearing children. I hope to use my training and skills to help develop bridges between them.

Additional Comments:

I am a Deaf person who is from Japan, and I am at CSUN as an International Student. I have experienced the Deaf world as well as the Hearing world as I’ve grown up.
