The department's long-standing strength in California history is supported by the W. P. Whitsett Foundation, which funds an endowed professorship in California history as well as an annual lecture series in Western and California history. The Whitsett Endowment also sponsors student participation in conferences, and research projects at the California State Government archives in Sacramento.
