School Programs
Through the use of community service learning pedagogy, Communicating Common
Ground, promotes learning about intercultural communication and diversity issues
by linking Communication Studies courses at California State University,
Northridge with 9th and 10th grade classes at Grant High School.
 | Our first curricular program, Bridging
Differences/Building Community, seeks to reduce ethnic conflict and
promote understanding of racial, ethnic and cultural difference by
facilitating dialogues across difference. Students in the Communication
Studies 356 Intercultural Communication course are trained to utilize the
knowledge and skills acquired in class to facilitate learning among the high
school students. Teaching, learning goals and learning outcomes for the
project are designed and accomplished on several levels including those for
high school students, CSUN students and for the Grant High School community.
|
 | Our second curricular program, Globalizing
Culture/Making Connections, seeks to increase students understanding of
intercultural communication issues within a global context. CSUN
students in the Communication Studies 356 Intercultural Communication course
develop weekly sessions on topics that assist Grant students in making
connections between global and local concerns such environmental racism, third
world exploitation of labor in the U.S. and abroad, inequities in wealth
distribution, media representation and cultural imperialism, and war and
terrorism. Teaching, learning goals and learning outcomes for the
project are designed and accomplished on several levels including those for
high school students and CSUN students.
|
 | An additional program, initiated by students in the Communication Studies
656 Graduate Seminar in Intercultural Communication, uses critical ethnography
to understand students', teachers' and administrators' attitudes and
perceptions about the student population, the school climate and racial/ethnic
tension on campus. |
