Dr. Don Brownlee
received his B. A. in Government and in Speech Communication from
Texas Christian University. His M. A. in Speech and Theatre is from
the University of North Texas. His Ph.D. in Speech Communication, with
an emphasis in Group and Organizational Communication, is from the
University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Brownlee has been active professionally, serving as President of the Cross Examination Debate Association, Vice-President of the Southern Forensics Association and Parliamentarian of the national honorary fraternity, Pi Kappa Delta. He founded and served six years as editor of the journal, Contemporary Argumentation and Debate. He has authored over a dozen articles and one book.
Dr. Brownlee has served as a political debate analyst for several newspapers, including the Dallas Times Herald, the Charlotte Observer, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner and the Los Angeles Daily News. He was also a Presidential debate analyst for United Press International (UPI).
At CSUN Dr. Brownlee has promoted opportunities for students to debate in international settings. He created the Sino-American Debates and CSUN students were the first from any nation invited to debate in the People’s Republic of China. His students were the first invited by Holland Debate for a debate series in the Netherlands and were also the first invited to debate at the prestigious Medvedev Institute in Moscow. His CSUN students were selected as one of twelve universities representing the United States for the Canadian-American Debates hosted in Montreal.
Dr. Brownlee teaches courses in argumentation, persuasion, political communication, group communication, legal communication, freedom of speech, and nonverbal communication.
