Center
for Human Relations
The Center is housed in and administrated by the
Department of Communication Studies in the College of Arts, Media and
Communication at California State University, Northridge. It is a collaborative,
learning-centered institution that combines the contributions of different
academic disciplines to serve the needs of the diverse student population
of our region and the community.
For example, the Center:
- Seeks to develop skills for addressing human
relations and social justice at the personal, institutional, national,
and international level to enhance global citizenship.
- Promotes a shift in value systems from ethnocentrism
to an understanding of the need for and appreciation of multiple-cultural
views.
- Encourages research designed to increase understanding
of different cultural/international positions and diverse perspectives
in the arts, media, humanities, health, business, education and the
social sciences.
- Provides new strategies to balance competition
and individualism with cooperation and communal concern to the benefit
of all peoples.
- Promotes dialogue that increases understanding
of the contextual, cultural and ethnic based variations in notions
of fairness.
The Center also seeks to:
- Facilitate dialogue between diverse peoples,
communities and governments;
- Research cultural and social issues and their
implications for competent global citizenship;
- Explore diverse processes for social justice;
- Undertake community empowerment programs;
- Train future leaders,
- Educate community, civic and corporate professionals;
and
- Provide public education aimed at improving
human relations and social justice in local, national and international
arenas.
There is no similar center in the San Fernando
Valley, in California or indeed west of the Mississippi.
