WELCOME - Opportunities

Academic Preparation

The Department of Communication offers an
academically-focused curriculum appropriate for students considering advanced degrees in communication as well as careers in research, teaching and consulting, and an array of communication oriented careers in public and private organizations.

Life-Centered Learning

The Department of Communication Studies offers coursework designed to improve students' life skills well beyond career preparation. Our classes help students become better family members, relational partners, neighbors, consumers, citizens, community leaders and activists, as well as better and more skilled professionals.

Service Learning Opportunities

Our department supports several service learning projects that involve our students in the community, including our Communication For Youth Institute which offers training in public speaking to local junior high and high school students. Communication majors can also take advantage of internship opportunities at a wide variety of businesses and nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley.

Co-curricular Learning Activities

Our department has a nationally competitive Debate Team and an active Performance Ensemble program. The CSUN Debate team is a full-service intercollegiate forensics program, offering students opportunities to participate in competitive debate and speaking events. The team travels to regional and national competitions, as well as occasional international events. The CSUN Performance Ensemble is an innovative and collaborative artistic organization dedicated to the development of new and original performance works designed to challenge traditional notions of theater, performance and social activism.

Student Participation

The CSUN Communication Association (CCA) connects students to faculty and provides workshops, study sessions, and social activities for Communication Studies students. The CCA offers a social support system as well as an avenue for building leadership skills through events such as Faculty/Student Meet and Greets, resume workshops for Communication Studies majors, speaker panels, alumni mixers, and various community service events.
