2013 Cohort

studentsDepartment of Secondary Education offers a two-year Master’s Degree Program designed for experienced English Language Arts teachers. We seek strong teachers who want to broaden their knowledge of literature, reading, composition, language, and technology; expand their range of teaching methods; and research an important area of English education. Our goals are to cultivate excellence in practice, to build professional leadership, and to introduce candidates to National Board of Professional Teaching Standards certificate activities. Participants in the program engage one another in ongoing collegial conversations and increase the effectiveness of the teaching and learning in their classrooms.

Classes meet back-to-back on Thursdays, from 4:20-9:45 p.m. Advisement is available continuously to those in the program.

booksFor program completion, six (6) units of credential program, transfer, or other qualified coursework are needed. Coursework at the time of graduation cannot be more than seven years old. Candidates in the program without these units may enroll in Independent Study, English Department, or other appropriate coursework during the summer or regular semesters.

Prior to the completion of 12 units of the program, a score at or above the 50th percentile of at least one section of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or at or above the 50th percentile of the Miller Analogy Test (MAT) is required for those with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0. If the undergraduate GPA is below 2.5, admission cannot be guaranteed and will be handled on a case-by-case basis. If the undergraduate GPA is 3.0 or higher, the GRE/MAT requirement is waived. Also prior to the completion of 12 units of the program, a passing score (8) is required on the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam or its equivalent at another university. (Many will have completed the UDWPE requirement as undergraduates.) Please save all copies of university correspondence.
