Special Education
The Education Specialist credential authorizes services in the following specialization areas:
Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH), teaching in the deaf and hard of hearing area; authorizes service to individuals ages birth to 22.
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE), serving children birth to pre-kindergarten with mild, moderate, severe, or multiple disabilities and their families.
Mild/Moderate Disabilities (MM), teaching K-12 students with specific learning disabilities, mild to moderate intellectual and other health impairments, and emotional disturbance; authorizes service in grades K-12 and for adults through age 22.
Moderate/Severe Disabilities (MS), teaching K-12 students with severe autism, multiple impairments, moderate to severe intellectual impairment, deaf-blindness and emotional disturbance; authorizes service in grades K-12 and for adults through age 22.
Traditional Credential Program: (serves all specialization areas)
- enter Fall or Spring
- flexible – full or part time
Accelerated Collaborative Teacher (ACT) (MM, MS, and DHH)
- collaborative program between CSUN and District 2 of LAUSD
- full time afternoons and evenings for coursework and on site during the day
- cohort atmosphere with personalized advising and guaranteed course enrollment
- one on one coaching by experienced classroom teachers
- completed in two semesters for candidates in mild/moderate disabilities and three-four semesters for candidates in moderate/severe disabilities and deaf and hard of hearing.
Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP Junior Option) (MM, MS, DHH)
- leads to a Bachelor’s degree and Education Specialist Credential concurrently
- lower division requirements and junior standing must be achieved
- may enter at any time and attend part or full time
- courses are not co-horted
- includes some field experience
Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP Freshman and Junior Options) (MM, MS, DHH)
- leads to a Bachelor’s degree and Education Specialist Credential concurrently
- must be college ready for Math and Science
- Fall semester admission only
- full time
- extensive field experience
Internship (serves all specialization areas)
- open to those with full time employment in a public special education position
- partnership with local school districts
- complete coursework while on the job
- courses offered late afternoon or evening
- includes coursework, field experiences and seminars
Resource Certificate
- This certificate authorizes the holder to provide services to students in collaboration with the general education teacher. Prerequisite credential is an Education Specialist credential in Communication Handicapped, Learning Handicapped or Severely Handicapped, and a Multiple Subject or Single Subject Credential.
