The University's Commitment to Students with Disabilities
The University’s commitment to welcoming a diverse community requires that every individual have an equal opportunity to contribute in the classroom based on his or her knowledge and skills, without regard to disability. Cal State Northridge is known for its many fine programs serving students with disabilities and for its faculty.
Pursuant to federal law and state and university policies, the university endeavors to make reasonable accommodations for the functional limitations resulting from a student’s disability, and provides equal access to all of its programs and facilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits state and local governments from discriminating against any qualified person with a disability. ADA states, “All government facilities, services, and communications must be accessible consistent with the requirements of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. ” Section 504 prohibits discrimination on the basis of physical or mental disability, and states that “no otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States...shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance…”
In accordance with the ADA, and Section 504, Executive Order 926, “The California State University Policy on Disability Support and Accommodations” serves to document and make explicit system wide policies for disability support and accommodation programs.
