February 2015

Greetings from the Center on Disabilities at California State University, Northridge!

The first Conference Newsletter for 2015 is packed with announcements, reminders, and exciting information that highlights the action you’ll find at this year’s event.
Before we get to all the conference news, I am pleased inform you that The Center on Disabilities (COD) is proud to announce thatVolume 2 of the Journal on Technology & Persons with Disabilitieshas been published.  Thank you to all our contributing authors!

New for 2015

We are excited to announce that for the first time we will be live-streaming the Keynote Address so that everyone can “attend” the opening of the 30th Anniversary Conference.

As you may remember, last year we recorded the “Best of 2014 CSUN” and we will be releasing one or two general sessions from this package each week leading up to this year’s event.  The schedule for these videos will be posted on the website so check it out and enjoy these sessions at your convenience.

This year, we are expanding this program and will be recording 2 full days of one track of the General Sessions in one room! The conference schedule will be updated to reflect the selections being recorded and signage will be posted on-site at this room.  Please note, that your attendance at one of these sessions means you agree to the possibility that your likeness may be captured on film; we thank you in advance for your cooperation when attending these sessions. Stay tuned for more details as we prepare for this conference experience again.

These recorded sessions will be made available for purchase following the conference and will include other conference highlights, so it will be a great opportunity for all conference attendees to “squeeze” in some missed activities and those who were unable to join us on-site, to experience the conference.

A policy reminder for all the presentation rooms:  Unauthorized recordings of any nature are strictly prohibited and cellphones and mobile devices should be turned off or silenced in consideration of others.

Pre-Conference Workshops

We encourage you to check-out the selection of Pre-Conference Workshops offered this year, so that you can come early and learn more!  Several of these are almost at their maximum attendance so please register as soon as possible.  Remember that CEU’s are available from AAC Institute for all Pre-Conference Workshops!

Keynote Address & Welcome Reception

Please be sure to join us in the Seaport Ballroom on Tuesday evening, March 3 at 5:30 pm for the official opening of the 2015 Conference, hosted by Conference Chair, Dr. Harry Murphy. Our Keynote Address this year will be delivered by Mr. Mick Ebeling.  Mr. Ebeling is the founder of the Ebeling Group (TEG), an award-winning, international production company and think tank. He is also the founder of the Not Impossible Foundation, a nonprofit organization that develops creative solutions to real-world problems. The Foundation’s mission, to take seemingly impossible ideas and transform them into useful applications that redefine the boundaries of possibility, is clearly demonstrated in their Project 001: The Eyewriter. This is an amazing journey that results in an open source, low-cost, DIY device that enables individuals with paralysis to communicate and create art using only the movement of their eyes.

Mr. Ebeling will be sharing his vision and philanthropic efforts along with his goals to raise public awareness and inspire change during his speech. This Keynote Address is the perfect blend of technology, human interest and inclusion and is certainly the best way we could imagine to start our 30th Anniversary CSUN Conference Celebration.

The Fred Strache Leadership Award will be presented to our own Dr. Harry Murphy, founder of the Center on Disabilities and the CSUN Conference by the person who inspired the award, Dr. Fred Strache.  This tribute will follow the keynote address.
