The Access Board Public Hearing

The Access Board announces that the update of the Section 508 Standards and Guidelines will be published on February 18, 2015.

The NPRM and supporting documents available on the Access Board’s website (http://www.access-board.gov ) on Wednesday, February 18. It should be published in the Federal Register shortly after that.

Note: This hearing will be held in conjunction with the CSUN Conference but persons wishing only to testify need not register for the conference.

Witnesses can testify in person at the hearing in San Diego. Witnesses can testify in person or by telephone at the hearing in Washington, DC. Copies of the rule will not be available at the hearings. Call-in information and a communication access real-time translation (CART) web streaming link for the Washington, DC hearing will be posted before the hearing at http://www.access-board.gov/ictrefresh.

Accessible technology plays a crucial role in the hiring, employment, career advancement and retention of people with disabilities. As such, technology is a key focus area of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP). During this featured presentation, ODEP's Chief of Staff Dylan Orr will highlight his agency's efforts to promote the development and adoption of accessible workplace technology by America's technology providers and employers. He'll update attendees on the agency’s efforts related to the recently released proposed rule to update section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act and Section 255 of the Communications Act, as well as the new rules under Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act and their potential impact on accessible online job applications and other workplace technologies. Mr. Orr will also explore new online tools from ODEP’s Partnership on Employment & Accessible Technology (PEAT), as well as recent collaborations with other federal agencies to ensure the accessibility of social media.

The digital economy’s impact on people with disabilities is profound and pervasive. Consequently accessibility to information and communication technologies and is critical to ensuring an optimal user experience for every citizen with a disability. Two of the nation’s leading agencies – the US Access Board and the Department of Justice will explain important updates to Section 508 and the ADA, as well as share their organizational perspective concerning accessibility to ICT.

 

USDOT's Accessible Transportation Technology Research Initiative (ATTRI)

The Accessible Transportation Technologies Research Initiative (ATTRI) is a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) joint research and development initiative co-led by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) with support from the ITS Joint Program Office (ITS JPO) and other Federal Agencies. The AATRI program will identify, develop and deploy new transformative applications or systems, along with supporting policies and guidance to address the mobility challenges of travelers with disabilities.

This interactive session will include a Q & A to solicit feedback as part of the Stakeholder User Needs portion for the ATTTRI.
