California State University, Northridge, Center on Disabilities' 21st Annual International Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference ~ March 20-25, 2006
General Information
The conference will be held March 20-25, 2006 at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport and the Los Angeles Airport Marriott Hotels. All conference activities are in these two hotels. The registration areas are on the Lobby Level of the Hilton and the Ballroom Level of the Marriott. The exhibits are located in the International Ballroom and Pacific Ballroom at the Hilton and the Ballroom Level at the Marriott. Speaker sessions will be held in both hotels.
Keynote Address and Opening Session
All participants are invited to the Keynote Address and Opening Sessions at 7:30 AM, Wednesday, March 22, 2006 in the International Ballroom of the Hilton hotel. A continental breakfast will be served. Consult your program upon arrival at the conference for more information.
General Session Scheduling
There will be NO MODERATORS at these sessions. Please begin and end on time. It would be greatly appreciated if you would leave the room immediately after your presentation, as another group will be arriving for the next session shortly after yours ends. The next speaker may need to have adjustments made to audio/visual equipment or the room set-up may need to be changed.
Equipment Needs
It is always a good idea to check the equipment being used for your session prior to the start of your presentation. If a specific set-up is required and will take more than 20 minutes set-up time, please make arrangements with an AV Tech 24 hours in advance of your session. Hilton AV Tech headquarters is located in Catalina A, Second Floor. Marriott AV Tech headquarters is located in the Boardroom, Ballroom Level.
If you are planning to bring your own equipment other than hand carry items (i.e. laptop), contact the hotel where you are presenting for loading and unloading information.
Evaluations
The evaluation form provided by the Center on Disabilities is for the overall conference. If you would like your session evaluated by the participants it is suggested that you provide your own evaluation form. Please remember to include your name and title of your presentation on the form. The door monitor should be alerted before your session begins that you are distributing evaluations. They will be instructed to collect them at the end of your session. It is your responsibility to collect the forms from the door monitor.
Handouts
Speakers are responsible for providing their own handout materials (minimum 100). In addition, it is requested that you produce and bring copies of handout materials for attendees with disabilities. You should include approximately 10 copies of enlarged print as well as 10 copies in Braille OR disk. If your session is directed at an audience that is mainly visually impaired, then you may want to bring more than the suggested number of alternative formats. If you believe your session will have a larger audience, it is suggested that you bring more than the minimum amount of handouts. It is always a good idea to have an address list for participants to sign so that you can send them additional handout materials at a later date.

Tips to Make Your Presentation More Accessible
• Always use the provided microphone as assistive listening devices are patched into the house amplification system.
• Make transparencies clear and readable.
• If showing a video, make certain it is of high quality.
• All videos should be closed captioned and audio described. If not, make appropriate accommodations as needed.
• Orally describe your visual materials (i.e. PowerPoint, web pages, videos, etc.) so that the individuals in the audience with visual impairments can follow along.
• Follow your outline and submitted paper for your presentation. Leave time for questions from the audience within your time slot.
• Speak clearly and refrain from excessive use of topic specific jargon.
• Face your audience when speaking, so that participants can read your body language and other expressions.
• If bringing handouts, have alternative formats readily available. (Braille, disk, large print, etc.)
