Abstract
BrailleNote was the world's first Windows CE-based personal digital assistant for the blind, and has continued to innovate and evolve since its launch in 2000. The success of BrailleNote has been due to its product design philosophy: create products based on mainstream technology that maximizes productivity and efficiency. Rather than adapt a user interface designed for the sighted with the use of screen reading, BrailleNote instead creates a non-graphical keyboard-centric interface to Windows CE.
With a user interface written exclusively for blind people, BrailleNote offers the best of both worlds, an intuitive menu-driven system with unrivaled context sensitive help, plus a set of shortcut keys for the power user who must retrieve and store information as efficiently as possible.
BrailleNote includes: • Word Processor that facilitates seamless inclusion in one document of text for embossing and printing, complete with Braille and print exclusion, • Planner that synchronises with Microsoft Outlook, supports recurring appointments and is designed for efficient retrieval and storage of data,
• A powerful database system that can synchronise addresses with Microsoft Outlook as well as catalogue a wide range of information,
• Web browser with intuitive navigation and well-developed Braille support,
• Scientific calculator
• powerful networking features
• optional GPS solution (the first to be introduced for a blindness PDA)
• Book Reader including support for Web Braille from the National Library Service as well as Bookshare.org download and unpacking,
• Media Player that supports a wide range of formats including MP3 and Windows Media
• Stopwatch
• custom pronunciation dictionary
• new features to be announced
This presentation will provide an overview of effective, efficient information management with BrailleNote, demonstrating BrailleNote's ability to respond to your changing needs. The Presentation will also update attendees with the latest developments in the rapidly evolving BrailleNote family, including BrailleNote PK, the world's smallest PDA with a Braille display, offering WiFi, Bluetooth, high quality sound and a fast processor for excellent performance. Updates for the existing BrailleNote family will also be demonstrated, that offer a raft of new features, including wireless networking, improved overall performance, intuitive web browsing using our unique KeyWeb browser, an expansion in the range of audio formats playable on BrailleNote, and much more.
