ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY: KEY TO UNLOCKING POTENTIAL & UNDREAMED OF POSSIBILITIES IN THE LEARNING DISABLED

Learn directly from an end user of assistive technology that was labeled at age 5 "unable to read, write, or learn and does not belong in school." I enthusiastically embrace, promote and use assistive technology to my full advantage; it has not only changed my life, but assistive technology has given me a life. When I received the gift of assistive technology, nearly 6 years after being formally diagnosed with dyslexia (along with several other learning disabilities and health challenges), I felt like I had a reawakened to the world. Up to that time, I had essentially forsaken my childhood to focus my complete effort, energy and time on learning and acquiring the most basic of academic skills that people without learning disabilities take for granted. . I felt like a trick-or-treater knocking on every door I could find, looking for a taste of the "Tree of Knowledge" that comes so easily to so many others, just not me. Assistive technology gave me the key to! the door that allowed me access to the world of the literate; with this technology I had a way to gain membership and there would be no turning back!

For more than four years, I have spoken at numerous conferences including CSUN 2001-2003, TRLD 2001, 02, 04a, instructed educators, non-profit service providers, individuals with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, and learning disabilities, and I will share with you how to correctly assess, select and seamlessly integrate products, that fit the specific needs of each learning disabled individual, so that each person may reach his/her full potential! Learning disabilities affects the manner in which individuals with normal to gifted intelligence take in, retain, and express information. Being learning disabled is commonly recognized as having a significant deficit in one or more of the following areas: oral expression, listening, comprehension, written expression, basic reading skills, reading comprehension, mathematical calculation, problem solving, time management, or sustained attention. But, by utilizing the amazing array of assistive technology products, individuals with learning disabi! lities no longer need t be restricted by their language and processing limitations. People with disabilities use tools to perform daily activities, the purpose of which is to help them compensate for areas of weakness or deficit. These tools, which include high-tech tools and devices are referred to as assistive technology. While forms of assistive technology are widely accepted for those with disabilities that manifest themselves in a physical manner, we must expand our thinking to include all forms of assistive technology, including the growing and effective array developed for the widely overlooked learning disabled population.

This presentation will focus on the use of assistive technology as a means of compensation for the specific deficits of dyslexia and other learning disabilities. Session attendees will learn to effectively and appropriately integrate assistive technology to help students with learning disabilities and general literacy issues. The correct assistive technology can facilitate the building of crucial literacy, learning, writing, and organizational skills, while allowing students full access to grade level content. Assistive technology can assure the matriculation of the fully capable learning disabled population from high school, college, and even post-graduate school, fully prepared to enter and successfully perform in the highly needed fields of tomorrow's society. Attendees will understand the usefulness, benefits, and purpose of specific assistive technology products and how to integrate them, including: Kurzweil 3000, Wizcom ReadingPen II, Inspiration, Draft:Builder, Drago! n Naturally Speaking, and many more. __________________________________
