Results from Studies of the VisAble VideoTelescope™ in Elementary, Secondary and Post Secondary Education

This session will provide the participants with a strong sense of the full potential and limitations of the VisAble VideoTelescope™ in the classroom by presenting the results of recent evaluations done in various education settings.

From elementary schools, to university, to continuing education in the workplace, contemporary curricula is presented in so many ways other than books and printed material. Modern multi-modal teaching techniques and visually centered education environments create unique challenges for the partially sighted learner.

The VisAble VideoTelescope™ is a hand held video low vision aid. Its autofocus zoom, contrast control and connectivity deliver independent access to a variety of challenging classroom vision tasks including: white and chalkboard work; hands-on projects; group work; independent library research; working with overhead transparency and computer projectors; connecting the VVT to laptops via USB for notetaking and portable CCTV use; and mobility and orientation around the school/college.

The VisAble VideoTelescope™ was recently evaluated in 3 studies with students from ages 6-75 (Kalamazoo Regional Education Service (KRESA), West Cheshire College, Chester, United Kingdom, and various public schools in British Columbia, Canada via SET BC). The study included participants with a wide variety of vision conditions including Startgaardts, Retinitis pigmentosa, cataracts, optic nerve atrophy etc.

Experience with the VisAble VideoTelescope™ in a variety of education specific tasks was graded, including tracking classroom activity, group work, black board/white board work and training times. In presenting these results special emphasis will be placed on VisAble VideoTelescope™ best practices supported by participants anecdotal experiences. Testimonials taken from participants logs, highlighting individual experiences with the technology will be included, for example:
