The Functionality of a Post-Secondary High Tech Center and Daily Operations

El Camino College is one of the oldest institution and one of the first to have High Tech Center (HTC). The HTC was established in 1987 through a grant from the California Community College foundation and the State Department of Rehabilitation. It has grown from 4 computers to 15+ computers. The computers in the HTC are currently Windows XP Professional. Critical data such as Dragon National Speaking is stored on Window 2000 server. HTC use roaming profiles which allows students to use their customized profiles on any of the machines. HTC also designed "timer" program to keep track of student usage and statistical information.

The mission of the HTC is to provide training and resources for students with disabilities in the use of computer software and access technology so that they may transfer these skills to comparably accessible computer labs across campus and work force. The survival and functionalities of any HTC rests heavily on several sound principles. For 17 plus years, the HTC has evolved and played a very important role on campus and the lives of the students.

Training protocols of hourly staff.

* Principle Four:
Accessibility in other existing labs on campus.
