A. Introduction

Voice Mate is the third generation of voice recognition organizers from Parrot. This device uses the latest Digital Signal Processor and memory technology. Voice Mate has a new microprocessor and its software has benefited from the feedback of thousands of satisfied users of earlier versions, world-wide.

Interaction with the Voice Mate is extremely easy : It talks to you and you answer by pressing on "YES" or "NO".

Example of Voice Mate.

B. Exterior Description

The Voice Mate is hold in one hand. A screen is felt at the curved edge of the unit. Underneath that screen is a protruding rubber button called the "function selector" that lets you cycle through the functions as you press on it.

To the right of that selector, still underneath the screen, you can feel the small grid of the microphone. Just underneath on both sides are handles that will help you open the lid.

Centered on that lid, you can feel two bumpers and a grid for the speaker. To the upper left and on the side of the unit is the click button. Using the Voice Mate, you will have to press and hold the "click" to record, press shortly on the "click" once to wake up the unit and double click rapidly to send tones, play back messages, results, or have the time spoken and so on. Just underneath the "click", still on the side of the unit is the data transfer outlet used to perform memory backups to a Windows system. This feature requires an optional cable and also lets you perform software upgrades from files available online.

Opposite on the other side, another hole lets you plug in the earphone. Now lets visit the back of the unit. At the upper right, a small pin hole with a reset marking will let you restart the unit if it ever crashes. Your information will be preserved when performing a reset. At the lower edge and on both sides are the battery bays. Two disposable AAA batteries per each bay need to be inserted with the plus turned downwards. You will feel the small locks at each side. Press outwards to open the doors.

C. Power supply

Four 1.5 V disposable batteries will power the Voice Mate for about 2 months under normal conditions.

A message asks you to replace the batteries when they are low. Rechargeable batteries can be used. Voice Mate stores all data on flash memory so you will retain your information even when running out of power.

Voice Mate has no "ON/OFF" switch. Voice Mate automatically falls asleep after 30 seconds it is not being used. Lid open, the unit wakes up in the last function that was being used.

For best voice recognition results, speak 10 inches away from the microphone. Speak naturally. Voice Mate is configured by default so that it will ask you to speak a name or keyword twice. Make sure that there is no background noise when you enter names or keywords. Also, the longer the name, the better the result.

The Voice Mate can be configured so that it will not wake up by accident when carrying it in a purse for instance. Once the feature is activated from the "Control Panel", waking up the Voice Mate requires either to open the lid, or, if the unit is asleep with the lid open, by simultaneously pressing on the "Pound" and "Star" keys.

Another way to wake up Voice Mate with the lid open is to flip it closed and open again.
