Five years ago Oregon State University began a comprehensive
campus wide effort to provide to its students, faculty and staff
with disabilities full access to its technologically rich
academic environment. After the completion of a comprehensive
needs assessment and the development of a comprehensive
institutional plan the Technology Access Program was implemented.
In addition as a part of this long term institutional plan the
concept for the Northwest Center for Technology Access was
developed and implemented.
Oregon State is now looked upon, by many, as a national model
for Technology Access in a Public University, and the policies
that have been developed as a part of this effort are being
widely adopted by other institutions. We still have a long way to
go, and are now moving on to stage two of the Northwest Center
project.
This presentation will provide participants an inside look at
the process that was used at Oregon State, the hurdles and
barriers that had to be overcome, and those that we are still
working on. We will also discuss the current initiatives of the
center, and what our plans are for the next five years.
