Dolphin Computer Access Ltd.

Configuring a screen reader to do what you want, when you want has previously been a time consuming and sometimes highly technical operation. Dolphin's new technology makes screen reader configuration a more intuitive operation by using a standard windows user interface, instead of configuration files or script. This presentation will demonstrate how easy it is to make configuration adjustments to a screen reader, making it Speak, Braille or Magnify what you want on demand. This session is targeted at existing screen reader users and people with basic experience of screen reader customization.

Supernova is Dolphin's combined screen reader and screen magnifier. It is also has powerful support for refreshable Braille displays. The challenge has been to come up with a flexible system where we at Dolphin can supply settings files to make it work correctly with custom applications, and still let the user make straightforward changes to control what it says in various situations.

The latest version of Supernova splits configuration settings into two halves. One half contains 'detection settings'. These are settings which allow Supernova to understand what is on the screen. The other half are 'output settings'. These settings control how Supernova informs you of changes on the screen, in the form of speech, Braille and Magnification.

During this presentation we will be concentrating on the 'output settings' half of Supernova.

Most of the session with involve a practical demonstrating of how you can customise Supernova's response to events such as key presses, Braille button presses and changes on the screen. We will be demonstrating how to set up Supernova to do a number of different things, with speech, Braille and magnification when such events occur. We will also be demonstrating the elegant simplicity of this new system and show how this configuration can be performed by a non technical user.
