For the special education teacher, thematic teaching can be very effective, because it organizes thought processes and gives a coordinated language base. The challenge special education teachers have, is not finding curriculum, it is adapting the curriculum to a wide variation of students placed in the classroom. Most classrooms have a variety of students with many different cognitive levels as well as different physical challenges. Materials and software programs need to be adapted so many skills can taught. This needs to be done in a fast and efficient manner.

This presentation will show how SofTouch's Talk Companion Activities and/or Talk Overlay CD software can be the perfect solutions when a teacher wants to adapt the curriculum to meet IEP goals. The focus of this presentation is to provide teachers with multi-sensory accessible software but also the tools and materials that will empower them to create and adapt off-line materials to support their curriculum. Teach Me to Talk has been a very popular program over the past few years. It uses real graphics, Mayer-Johnston symbols, music, puzzles, prose to teach language, cognitive thinking skills, mouse, switch or IntelliKeys use.

Teachers, therapists and parents are finding that their students are learning skills that are transferring to off-line activities. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the Teach Me to Talk Companion CD. This will provide the opportunity for teachers to extend the skills being introduced on the computer. The off-line materials are presented on a continuum from easy to more complex. Teachers can print out and laminate materials that give students many opportunities to practice the skills that meet their IEP goals.

Teach Me to Talk starts with students learning basic words. It expands to word categories, words with the same beginning sounds, prose with the words used and finally with 2-16 piece puzzles. The Companion CD also starts with single words. It then expands concepts such as big/little, what goes with, same/different. Games such as board games, card games, memory games are included in the activity lists. The graphics presented in these activities are real photographs. The Companion Activities are pre-designed and cannot be altered. There are times when teachers want to design their own activities. Talk Overlay CD is the perfect tool to quickly and easily design your own activities to individualize for your student. Because the graphics are ageless, so the ideas to make can also be ageless.

This presentation will give the participants the opportunity to see how to extend thematic units from the computer to off-line activities. Once teachers have printed the materials from the Companion CD they will be encouraged to change the graphics in Talk Overlay CD and apply the same strategies to other curriculum based units. This is only the beginning and provides the tools and information to enhance many units within the preschool curriculum.
