Section 508 and the Public University

Ron Stewart
Director
Northwest Center for Technology Access
Oregon State University

This presentation will focus on the impact of Section 508 of the Rehab Act on access and acquisition of the technology systems typically encountered by persons with disabilities in a modern post-secondary educational environment. Other recent legislative mandates and civil actions will also be presented and discussed. The goal of this presentation is to assist participants in the development of an effective and comprehensive institutional plan to insure Universal Access to Technology for persons with disabilities.

The challenges faced and solutions developed at Oregon State University will be used as a model for other institutions coming to grips with the requirements inherent in this and other recent legislative mandates. As one of the nations recognized leaders in technology mediated education, and as a very traditional academic research institution, these challenges were complex and involved the inclusion of all of the campus community in the development of effective solutions. This model is now in the process of being implemented, and initial reactions to this process will also be presented.
