Program Description

The TESL minor program in the College of Humanities provides foundational and introductory preparation for teaching English to speakers of other languages by gaining an understanding of how languages are acquired; through knowledge of English forms, meanings and uses; and by developing the skills needed to teach English.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students receiving a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of linguistic theory in phonetics, phonology, morphology and syntax.
  2. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of TESL theory, practice, methodology and assessment.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of theories of language structure, acquisition and language in context.
  4. Demonstrate basic skills to read, analyze and critically evaluate research, including a high level of critical thinking and problem solving.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between language use and culture.
