Single Major Option

Program Description

The single major in Chicano and Chicana Studies is a 45-unit program designed to give the student special preparation in the discipline of Chicano and Chicana Studies through a combination of lower and upper division core requirements. Students must also take at least nine units from upper division electives in any of the following areas: Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts, Education, and/or Environmental Justice and Public History. The major is particularly suited for those students preparing to enter the fields of teaching or social work. It is also a preparation for those intending to enter various graduate and professional fields, such as history, sociology, psychology, library science, political science, social welfare, law, and urban studies, as well as careers related to environmental justice.

Undergraduate students must complete 48 units of General Education as described in this Catalog, including 3 units of coursework meeting the Ethnic Studies (ES) graduation requirement.

18 units are satisfied by the following courses in the major: CHS 380 or CHS 381 satisfies upper division C2 Humanities; CHS 331 satisfies upper division D1 Social Science; CHS 445 satisfies D3/D4 Constitution of the United States/State and Local Government; CHS 270SOC/F satisfies E Lifelong Learning; and CHS 100 and CHS 365 satisfy F Comparative Cultural Studies. The Ethnic Studies (ES) requirement is met through coursework in the major.

If taken, CHS 310 satisfies upper division C1 Arts; CHS 345, CHS 346, CHS 347, CHS 361, CHS 362 or CHS 366 satisfies D1 Social Sciences.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Chicano and Chicana Studies will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an ability to think critically, analytically and creatively about the Chicana/o experience in the local and global society.
  2. Demonstrate competency in oral, written and research skills.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of creative and performance arts.
  4. Acquire a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Chicana/o history, culture, arts, language and sociopolitical issues.
  5. Acquire the leadership skills that will promote social change in Chicana/o communities and broader society.

ADT/STAR Act Degree Road Maps
