Prof. Jonathan Martínez

.

Professor Jonathan MartínezJonathan B. Martínez joined the Central American Studies Program as a part-time faculty in the Fall 2011.

Jonathan B. Martínez received a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a minor in Kinesiology from California State University, Northridge. From there he went on to complete an M.S. in Counseling with an option in College Counseling and Student Services and a Graduate Certificate in Career Education and Counseling. from California State University, Northridge. His interdisciplinary research examines intrinsic motivation among first-generation Central American Latina/o college students as it relates to their academic motivation. He became a part of the Central American Studies program first as a student while the department was still being established, and now as a part-time professor teaching the freshmen writing courses.

Jonathan is interested in looking at the different factors that motivate first- generation Central American and Latina/o College students attend and complete college.

Jonathan also works with the Advising Resource Center/EOP as an Academic Advisor. He advises and mentors hundreds of undeclared incoming first-year students and continuing students. His goal is to provide general advisement and student support services tailored to each student’s individual needs especially to “historically underrepresented” student population. He believes excellent academic advising is closely linked to student persistence and satisfaction with their college experience.
