Application Process

Starting the application

Be prepared for a long process and various timelines.

  • For most fellowship and research programs, you have to apply months in advance before even receiving a first response. Plan a year ahead when looking for opportunities.
  • Internships are listed at various times of the year and have a shorter deadline period. You may only be required to submit a cover letter, résumé, and references.
  • Others, like large internship programs, may take more time to receive a response. Often times you will have to apply a year in advance. You will most likely have to submit materials; perhaps a statement of purpose.

Do your research.

  • Investigate the internship, fellowship, or research opportunity and its website. Try to find out information on past recipients and their successes.
  • Be familiar with the application, requirements, and job details.

Apply early.

  • The application process can take awhile, especially if you must rely on others to write recommendations. Try to apply as early as you can.
  • For some research opportunities, especially those with rolling deadlines, the earlier you submit the application, the better chance you have of being considered for the position.

Ask for help.

  • Do not be afraid to ask for help on the application, cover letter, résumé, and research proposal. The Career Center can help you build on your ideas.
  • Asking for help from others will also prevent you from feeling so overwhelmed. Not only will you receive guidance, but you may discover new ideas for your résumé.

Submitting the application

Be professional and organized.

  • Print out everything and do not write by hand on the forms.
  • Keep copies of all information and paperwork that you submit.
  • If any items are stand-alone documents within the application (like a personal statement) number the pages and include your name in case anything gets separated.

Triple check for errors.

  • Look over your application to make sure everything has been completed.

Relax.

  • Do not immediately contact the program committee inquiring about your application. If you really feel the need to contact someone, wait at least until the submission deadline has passed.
