Deborah Voigt

Sunday, May 19 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm - Valley Performing Arts Center, Great Hall
http://www.valleyperformingartscenter.org/calendar/deborah-voigt/

Once in a generation, a true dramatic soprano comes along, with a rare voice uniquely suited for the works of Wagner and Strauss: Deborah Voigt is that voice.  Widely acknowledged as the pre-eminent dramatic soprano performing today, she has made her mark on some of the world's most prestigious stages in both operatic and Broadway concert roles. From her interpretation of Brunnhilde in the new Robert Lepage Ring Cycle at the Metropolitan Opera to her critically acclaimed performance as Annie in Annie Get Your Gun, Deborah Voigt demonstrates her far-reaching range and sensitivity with beautiful tone, dramatic acuity and well-placed lyricism. She continues to expand her repertoire into Italian opera, singing the role of Minnie in Puccini's La Fanciulla del West in 2010.

Accompanied by Brian Zeger on the piano, Deborah Voigt will be showcasing her talents through a wide range of pieces by composers such as Richard Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Leonard Bernstein.

Dubbed "The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook," Grammy-nominated artist Michael Feinstein is considered one of the premier interpreters of American standards. He is a multi-platinum-selling, five-time Grammy-nominated recording artist who as a young man was introduced to Ira Gershwin by the widow of legendary concert pianist/actor Oscar Levant. Through Gershwin he met his next-door neighbor, Rosemary Clooney, and his role as the champion of American song was sealed. This concert returns the artist to Los Angeles, the site of his early career.

http://www.valleyperformingartscenter.org/calendar/john-mauceri/

The distinguished and extraordinary career of John Mauceri has brought him not only to the world's greatest opera companies and symphony orchestras, but also to the musical stages of Broadway and Hollywood, as well as the most prestigious halls of academia. His mentors include Leopold Stokowski, Leonard Bernstein, and Carlo Maria Giulini. One of the world's most accomplished recording artists, he is the recipient of  Grammy, Tony, Olivier, Drama Desk, Edison, two Emmy and four Deutsche Schallplatten awards, among other prestigious recognitions. A graduate of Yale University, where he taught for 15 years, he is completing his seventh year as chancellor of the University of North Carolina's School of the Arts, the nation's unique stand-alone public university of conservatories in music, dance, drama, filmmaking, and design & production. For sixteen seasons at the Hollywood Bowl, Mr. Mauceri broke all records by leading over 300 performances before a collective audience of 4 million people with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, which was created for him by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

Mauceri will present Music In The Life Of A Great City, Rite of Spring at 100. This inspired work looks at the powerful influence that Stravinsky's music had on Hollywood film composers in the 40s and 50s. It is an influence that can still be felt in today's contemporary film scores.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and pop music auteur Rufus Wainwright is one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed artists of his generation. Born into a musical family (his father is legendary folk singer Loudon Wainwright III and his mother was the equally-influential Canadian singer Kate McGarrigle) he exploded onto the scene in the late-nineties with both his debut self-titled album and its follow-up, Poses.

Famous for his distinctive, deeply emotional voice and mastery of the piano, Wainwright has built a vast following.  His prolific output includes a much-celebrated series of albums (Want I & II, 2003-2004), an opera (Prima Donna, 2009), and seven studio and two live recordings.
