9th Annual EOH Technical Symposium
âEnergy Alternatives for California's Future:
Environmental and Occupational Health Aspectsâ
March 5, 2014 California State University, Northridge
Rising energy costs and increased awareness among the public are finally starting to force global leaders to research alternatives, and provide funding, to develop renewable energy production. Issues like global warming are becoming mainstream reality and causing world-wide concerns about pollution and consumption. In this symposium, we will consider not only the need for change, but also the environmental and occupational health challenges that will accompany large-scale changes to various forms of renewable energy production. Our proposed program includes the topics of climate change, renewable energy regula-tions and policies, sustainability considerations, fossil fuels, solar and wind generation, and toxins associated with energy production and utilization.
Program and registration details will be available early January 2014. For additional information at this time please send your request to eohalumni@csun.com or call Bob Finkelstein at 818-383-4171
Our program will offer 8 hours of Continuing Education Credits for CIH, CSP, REHS, and other organizations

Saturday, February 15 - Saturday, March 29 All Day - Art Gallery (AG)
http://www.csun.edu/artgalleries

Opening Reception: Saturday, February 15  4-7 pm

Curator Talk: Monday, February 17  10 am

Panel Discussion with Artists and Catalog Signing: Saturday, March 22 1 pm

Curated by CSUNâs Art History Professor Mario Ontiveros, this exhibition focuses on eight Los Angeles-based artists who reconfigure the genre of self-portraiture. Utilizing their body, their likeness, and/or the intimately personal, the artists encourage an investigation into representation that lingers somewhere between its construction in response to material, psychic, and sociopolitical conditions and those personas that one imagines, shuns and/or desires. Artists include Michael Alvarez, Yreina Cervantez, Christina Fernández, Harry Gamboa Jr., Sandra de la Loza, Shizu Salamando, Ana Serrano and Mario Ybarra Jr. A full color catalog on the exhibition will be available for purchase.

Gallery and gift store hours are Monday through Saturday, from noon to 4 p.m., and on Thursday, from noon to 8 p.m. For more information, call CSUNâs Art Galleries at (818) 677-2156 or visit www.csun.edu/artgalleries.

9:00 am - 10:00 pm - University Student Union (USU)
http://hiphopthinktank13.org

The Hip-Hop Think Tank, Department of Pan African Studies, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and numerous departments and campus units invite the CSUN campus community to its biennial conference titled, Bridging the Gaps: Hip-Hop in the Age of Mass Incarceration and Deportation, scheduled for February 20-21, 2014 at CSUN.

Bridging the Gaps will bring together members of the Civil Rights, Black, and Brown Power movements with Hip Hop scholars, activists, and artists along with  immigrants rights organizations to explore how they are responding to the prison industrial complex, war on drugs, anti-immigration legislation, and the overall criminalization of communities of color. By illustrating the interconnections between Stop and Frisk in New York City, gang injunctions in Los Angeles, the Papers Please provisions in Arizona, South Carolina, and elsewhere, and the growing militarization of the US-Mexico border, the conference will highlight the denial of human rights experienced by each of these diverse communities, utilizing Hip-Hop social activism as our primary language.

The two-day conference begins with an opening reception, film festival, and talk by Hip-Hop activist and 2008 Vice Presidential candidate for the Green Party, Rosa Clemente, on Thursday, February 20th in the USU Theater from 5-10pm.

On Friday, February 21st, the conference continues at 9am in the Northridge Center with an opening keynote by Dr. Victor Rios, Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Barbara and author of Punished: Policing the Lives of Black and Latino Boys.  The day will continue with a series of panels and workshops with Hip-Hop scholars, activists, artists, and community organizations, such as Dr. Shana Redmond (USC), Dr. Melina Abdullah (CSULA), Dr. Denise Sandoval (CSUN), Boots Riley, Olmeca, Cihuatl Ce, Jasiri X, Luis J. Rodriguez, the Gr818ers, the Pico Youth and Family Center, Immigrant Youth Coalition, CURB, Tia Chucha's and many others. The conference culminates with a keynote address by Elaine Brown, former chair of the Black Panther Party, followed by a closing reception and open mic celebration. We sincerely hope that you will join us for this amazing conference.

To register for the conference or for more information visit: http://hiphopthinktank13.org. We look forward to seeing you there!
