One of the most famous propaganda ballets to have emerged from the Cultural Revolution, White-Haired Girl brought critical acclaim to the regional dance company in 1979. Since then, Shanghai Ballet has become one of the most pre-eminent international ballet companies in the world. Known for presenting ingenious interpretations of classical and contemporary repertoire, the ensemble under Xin Lili's artistic direction will enchant audiences with its exquisite performance of La Sylphide -- a romantic tale of a young man forever chasing an elusive, celestial being, only to encounter tragedy and heartache.
"The costumes were dazzling... Starting off in a low-key manner, the Shanghai Ballet ... built to a crescendo of rapidfire over-the-head lifts and tours en l'air at the sold-out ... Auditorium."

The Shanghai Ballet, whose performance of The White-Haired Girl won them the Gold Medal of the Best Classical Dance Works of the 20th Century in China, has become one of the world's premier international ballet companies. Since its founding in 1979, many of the ensemble's brilliant and rising young dancers have won numerous awards in global and nationwide competitions.
Under the graceful and lyrical temperament of Artistic Director Xin Lili, the company performs one of its signature folk-infused -- The Butterfly Lovers, a classical Western masterwork that follows a young couple's ill-fated romance. Elegant choreography, beautiful costumes, expressive hand gestures and theatrical pantomime convey the story's bittersweet beauty and complement Shanghai Ballet's stunning classical technique.
