ENERGY RECOVERY AND CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION FROM DISTILLERY WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROJECTS
11:00 am - 12:15 pm - University Student Union Theater (USU)
http://www.ecs.csun.edu/ecsdean/docs/Kulkarni20121025.pdf
Distilleries manufacture alcohol from molasses which is wastewater generated in cane sugar industry. The wastewater generated in the distillation process is called spent wash which is highly organic and polluting in nature. As per the norms of Pollution Control Board, distilleries have to follow “Zero discharge policy”. Traditionally, anaerobic lagoons followed by composting treatment is used. Though this method conforms the norms of Pollution Control Boards, it emits methane a Green House Gas responsible for global warming and climate change. The presentation discusses a case study of a distillery in Maharashtra State which is implementing a project in which instead of anaerobic lagoons, bio-digester is used for the treatment of spent wash. The biogas generated in the treatment is captured and burnt to generate electrical energy. Attempts are being made to get financial assistance to this project in the form of Carbon Credits under Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The paper also discusses the project cycle of CDM.
