Arid Eden

Monday, August 24 - 12:00 pm - Saturday, October 10 4:00 pm - Art Gallery (AG)
http://www.csun.edu/artgalleries

"Arid Eden" brings together two artists who project personal narratives onto the vast spaces of the desert landscape. In paintings done over the span of 25 years, Lauren Richardson uses the desert's shifting forms as a metaphor for attachment, loss and inexorable change. "North Star," by Michael C. McMillen, combines installation and film to create a madcap stream of deconstructed consciousness heading gleefully towards annihilation. Gallry hours are Mon.-Sat. 12-4 p.m., Thurs. 12-8 p.m.

Cal State Northridge history professor Tom Devine will lead a discussion of Kevin Boyle’s award winning book, “Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age.”

“Arc of Justice” is the story of Ossain Sweet, an African-American doctor who came to national attention in 1925 when he was tried for murder after attempting to defend his newly purchased home in a predominantly white neighborhood of Detroit. An unruly mob was trying to force Sweets and his family out. Boyle, a history professor at Ohio State University, won the National Book Award for non-fiction and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for his work, which explores Sweet’s trail against the backdrop of the Jazz Age and the nascent civil rights movement.

JJ's work with the award-winning "Delicious Peace" interfaith coffee coop was written up in the Oprah Magazine, "Not Just A Cup but a Just Cup." He has been leader of the Abayudaya youth movement in the 70's, chairperson of the Abayudaya community in the 90's and early in this decade, elected chairperson of the subcounty council for several years starting in 2002 (population 30,000), and founder and leader of the Delicious Peace interfaith coffee coop in recent years. He was honored, along with Kulanu, with an award from Tufts University's Global Leadership Institute for his work on the coffee coop.

Also featured will be Professor Jeffrey Auerbach from the History Department at CSUN. Jeffrey Auerbach is the author of The Great Exhibition of 1851: A Nation on Display (Yale University Press, 1999) and co-editor (with Peter Hoffenberg) of Britain, the Empire, and the World at the Great Exhibition of 1851 (Ashgate, 2008). He was also a contributor to Empire Online (accessible through the CSUN Library), and founding World History Editor of History Compass, an e-journal for history. An occasional consultant for the History Channel and the BBC, Prof. Auerbach is currently writing a book about the British Empire. A complete listing of publications and papers may be found on his curriculum vitae.

An elegant and energetic gentleman in top hat and tails in My One and Only. The precisely synchronized tapping and trick lariat dancing in The Will Rogers Follies. These memories serve as artistic milestones in the 50-year career of performer/director/ choreographer and Theatre Hall of Fame member Tommy Tune. With nine Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards, two Obie Awards, two Astaire Awards, the American Dance Award, the Drama League Award, the George Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement (the list goes on...), Tune is the most honored star in Broadway history!
